“Very Good Value”
Reviewed 11 October 2009

Very good value, excellent location, comfortable with helpful staff. We did try the 17 euro breakfast but there are many alternatives close to the Hotel at a fraction of the price. The 24 hour pass for metro/tram/bus etc can be purchased from a machine at the adjacent metro station and is again very good value.

We selected the Sofitel mainly because its a well-known brand hotel. We could be assured it would be nice accommodations in an new city (it was our first time to Lisbon). There were other similar "starred" (4 star) hotels in the area that were less expensive, but we were very pleased with our choice! The bed and linens were very comfortable, furnishings modern, and offered L'Occitane toiletries. We stayed 3 nights in a "superior" room with city view, and we had no street noise despite being street side because the hotel faces Avenida Da Liberdade which runs along a beautiful old promenade/park.

The hotel is well located within walking distance to many of the sight seeing locations (e.g., Barrio Alto) in city center as well as convenient to transportation options to other locations. The entrance to the Metro is literally in front of the hotel entrance, and the starting point of touristic Tram #28 is just a short 10 minute walk away, for example. The taxi from airport to the hotel was only 11 Euro before tip.

We ended each day of sight seeing with a drink and/or dinner in the comfortable lobby bar. We sat in the bar couch for hours each day just enjoying the rest, drinking wine, beer, and port, and simply reading or people watching. We never felt rushed and the staff was always gracious. Furthermore, they all spoke fluent English which was very helpful. The hotel also offers free local and international (i.e., English language) newspapers in the "library" adjacent to the bar. Wi-Fi also is available in the lobby bar with several electrical plugs accessible while sitting at the tables or couches. (There's a small discount on Wi-Fi access with multi-day purchase -- the same account can be used throughout the hotel.)

We happened to be at the hotel while the road crew of Green Day were also staying there -- they were noticeable but hardly ill-behaved. Another night happened to be election night and a candidate's party was being held at the hotel on Sunday night which added to the novelty of the stay. We watched TV as the results come in and could hear the same cheers on screen as well as from the conference rooms from the level below. In essence, the hotel was a nice combination of welcoming comfort with a little city buzz of things "happening".

I'd well recommend this hotel.

We stayed 2 nights at the Sofitel last week. The location is perfect, with a metro station outside the door. It wasn't possible to park the car for check-in, but the doorman took the keys and the baggage and that was all there was to check-in. Luxurious rooms, though small, but not small for a large city. Best service we experienced on our trip. As well as the best breakfast buffet. The breads were up to French standards. If you want eggs as part of your buffet, they are individually prepared, rather than left sitting in a warm dish for hours. Buffet price was 17 euros and parking was 20 euros. We reserved in advance and got a room rate of 125 euros, a fantastic price for such quality. Hotel is close enough to barrio alto that you can enjoy the city's night life and still walk home safely, enjoying all those night lights. Lisbon is a lovely city.

This is a great hotel, giving the impression of luxury from the minute you walk through the doors. Tastefully decorated in both the public areas and the room. Nice plush bed to make your stay comfortable. Large bathroom and modern decor is what you will find in the room. All furnishings looked quite new. Classy traditional decor best describes the room interior. The size is also very good for Europe, providing ample space for a couple of adults. There is a tiny, but clean, 24 hour gym. We found the hotel to be well maintained in general.

Great staff at reception. They were most efficient and helpful.

The hotel's location is ideal, as it is on the main strip, an easy walking distance to the old town and Barri Alto. We found it ideal, even as tourists.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights.
The two first rooms proposed by the receptionist had a light cigarette ordor.
Finally, the third room was ok. The room was well decorated and very confortable, with a luxury bathroom. However, we found it not as big as we could expect for this level of standard.
The sound isolation could be very improved: we heard two times at night erotic sounds coming from the next room, the air conditionning systemwas noisy (even when switched off) and there was no double door to separate the room and the corridor.
The breakfast is expensive (17€/pers) but very good, with portuguese specialities.
The hotel is located just in front of a metro station, a airport bus stop, and about 10min walking from the city centre.

My daughter and I stayed here for two nights. The staff bent over backwards to make our stay pleasant. There was free internet service in the business center behind the reception area. Our room overlooked the beautiful Avenida da Liberdade, with a nice view of St. George's Castle. The room was spotless, beautifully decorated with comfortable beds. The location was perfect. We could walk to the castle through the Alfama neighborhood, shopping in Baixa, down to Comercio Square, and all places in between. Everything was so accessible. A trip to the Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery did require a taxi ride. Our first night we were tired, having both been up for two days; I was traveling from Chicago and my daugher from Iraq. We ordered room service and had fabulous fresh fruit, cheeses, bread, etc. Quick service.

When we left Lisbon, the hotel arranged our transportation to the airport, no stress.

We loved Lisbon and would happily return. I can't imagine staying anywhere but the Sofitel.

I found this hotel to be pretty much as I expected based on the other reviews. The rooms are a bit on the small size and the rather odd double doors to the bathroom mean it is not as private as you may like. However, this hotel has an excellent location with the metro literally outside the door and the decor is stylish and modern. I also found the staff to be very polite and helpful. I was surprised to discover that there was no toaster at breakfast or an option to order toast. I have never come across this in a hotel before. Although the available food at breakfast was good it was a bit limited considering the hefty 17 euro price.
