“A very nice hotel, but not for the light sleeper”
Reviewed 16 August 2012

The Hotel Florida has a very good location. Close to the Marquês de Pombal Square wich is at the end ov Avenua Liberdade and close to Edward VII park. you can walk down Liberdade towards the heart of Lisbosa and look at the deisgnershops on your left hand side or cafes and restaurants on you right. or just take the Metro, one minute or so from the hotel.

The Florida has been a hotel since 1941 and is nicely built up was a film theme hotel. Cool reception with a friendly bar and a decent breakfast. We got the best room in the whole hotel. The Orson Wells room, 916. with a huge balcony a nice bathroom and retro decorations. The other two best rooms is 914 and 917 facing the front of the building and with own balconys.

But now the the cons. The sound insulation is very bad. Even in our room wich is at the top floor we could hear doors slamming and people talking in the hallway. I woke up many times due to this and we spoke to the reception about it if the maids could be more quiet. It helped a little bit. But what they need to do is to cover the space betwwen the doors and the floor and also maybe thinking og soundproofing all the walls.

I was tempted to give this a 3 star but ended up in giving it four stars due to good service and a very nice room and a perfect location. They also have a great restaurant " The great American disaster" with superb burgers and do try the milkshakes :-)

Room Tip: 916 is the best then 914 and 917

We arrived at the hotel which was very close to the metro (marques de pombal). On arrival we were told that due to problems with their software that they were over booked and an alternative hotel was arranged with transport to the hotel. We were not happy and asked for compensation, at this point a room was suddenly available. The room was bright and modern with a tv but no mini bar even though there was a fridge. We also didnt have tea and coffee facilities at first but then later on realised it should have been included. The bathroom was average but didn't seem to be newly refurbished liked the room but all in working condition and the shower was good.
The staff were initially helpful and friendly but we did encounter one or two miserable and unhelpful members of staff.
The bar area was only large enough for 4 chairs and shouldn't be described as one more like a doctors waiting area and the bar man didn't want to be there since he had to be called from elsewhere.
The American diner which is affiliated with the hotel was hard to locate. We had to ask reception where it was since it was poorly sign posted. It was in a little arcade at the back of the hotel up a flight of stairs. The food was cheap and large portions - generally good value for money!
The hotel offered a buffet breakfast for 11 euro each however we went to a local cafe down the road which was cheaper. It also had a general store which included large bottled water for 1 euro compared to the hotel which charged 3euros.
Generally the location is a selling point for this hotel, its in a banking district so not loads of tourists but the open top tourist bus was on the other side of the roundabout. Also the hotel has
modern quirky 'Hollywood' features, which was original.
I would recommend this hotel for it's location but have stayed in better 4 star hotels!

Nice hotel, next to rotunda do Marquês de Pombal, very well located next to public transportation.
If coming by car, very difficult to park in the surrounding, but with some patience you will manage to get a spot.
Hotel is becoming a bit old and need some update, but still a good choice
all rooms are unique, as the decoration is based on a cinema theme (movie, character,..), which makes the experience unique.
Breakfast is good, but used to be better in the past
Internet is paid.

I have just stayed at Hotel Florida one time but had it recommended by my parents. Book a room with queen sized bed.
The room and bathroom were large and clean.
In all, I was satisfied. My one complain is that paying 5 euro per day for slow Internet is ridiculous for a 4 star hotel

Didn't try the breakfast.

Hotel Florida is located very close to the Marques de Pombal Aerobus stop, which makes it easy and cheap (EUR 3,50 July 2012) to get to and from the hotel. The hotel is located on a side street with more hotels, and easy access to banks, shopping areas and restaurants. This area at the top of Avenida de Liberdade is great if you don´t want to stay smack in the middle of the wild nightlife of Alfama or Barrio Alto, and also enjoy a dose of daily walking. The walk down the Liberdad is brimmed with cafés, shops and restaurants, but of a more quiet character than the ones in Barrio Alto. The hotel itself scores very high on the points I value most (security, in-room safe, cleanliness and location). It seems the place was newly renovated, so the rooms have a nice and fresh decoration. A big plus for the wooden floor instead of a carpet! There are some nice balconies and roof terraces on the 2nd floor, to hang out (but are also where the smokers are directed to). There is a mini gym, with a cross-trainer and a pilates ball. The breakfast buffet is great, a lot fresh fruit & fruit salad, juices, yoghurt, the fried stuff including scrambled eggs, white and brown bread, cheese & ham, coffee with warm milk easily accessed at a few tables around the room. (A few more cheese types to choose from would up the review even more.)The breakfast room has a nice view over Marq de Pombal square, and there is a balcony where you can finish off your coffe if you like to hang outside.

I stayed here with my boyfriend in July. We had moved from a hotel in Belem for a change of scenery. It was 63 euros a night and if we had paid more we would not have been amused. The entrance of the hotel is lovely, black and white 1920's theme (Lisbon LOVES a theme) and the hotel would have been impressive had they put as much care and quality into the rest of it...they haven't. The rooms need a lick of paint, especially the windowsills. The rooms had paper thin walls and we heard everything, the hoover, the lifts, outside etc. Made me feel like an awkward teenager trying to have a lie in. The curtains and throws could do with a wash, and the hall ways look a bit dismal. There is no atmosphere what so ever. Never saw anyone on the outside terrace which made it look miserable. The staff are cold and I can honestly say they did not crack a smile once. We rang reception to ask for a taxi and were told 'to ring them ourself they speak English'. Shocking customer service. Location wise, its great. Its next to great transport links and is a lovely 15 minute walk to the city centre. Stay here if you want cheap and clean, but don't be mislead by their pictures and website. Make sure you go to Belem, (has some great water side restaurant bars) and Barrio Alto (has a great night life and check out Restaurant Pharmacia which is right next to a fab look out point over Lisbon), they are about 4 to 6 euro in a taxi or get the tram. Lisbon is a beautiful city, a must see!

We stayed here for two nights at the beginning of our trip and one night at the end. The hotel is centrally located off the Marques de Pombal round-about. We took the Aerobus from the airport. It is about a 15 minute walk into the city center down a lovely avenue. For our first stay, the hotel gave us two connecting rooms, which was really nice. The rooms were big, clean and decorated in a funky style. The beds were comfortable, which is rare in Europe! On our way out, we had a family rooms, which had plenty of space. The breakfast was good with lots of fresh fruits, fresh muffins, meats, cheeses and several hot dishes. They also had coffee and hot milk to make chocolate. There are several good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. The staff was very friendly. On our day of departure they called us a cab and told us hat the rate would be.
