“A Grand Experience”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

We stayed at The Ritz at the end of a tour of Northern Spain and Portugal and I must say it's one of the best hotels I've ever used. Rooms are large, facilities extraordinary. Staff very courteous and friendly - special praise for the concierge who organised excursions and the best Fado experience possible! It's in a quiet part of town with fantastic views over the city, yet not far from the shopping and entertainment districts.
I can strongly recommend The Ritz.

We wanted very much to like this hotel. At the price we paid for our premium high-floor room and the very expensive drinks and snacks in the bar, we expected to have a great and romantic end to our 3 week trip. Instead, we were eager to go home.

Housekeeping: our room was still not made up when we returned after 2pm. When I inquired at the front desk, I was told that the hotel was "full" and staff were busy. This was inexcusable for a hotel of this level.

Check-in: we had the mis-fortune to arrive behind a tour group. Instead of the desk staff forming one line for the tour group and another for independent travelers, we had to wait behind the tour group. When I have been part of a tour group, the tour group guide gathered all of our passports, checked us in and handed out the room keys. Instead the Four Seasons staff dealt with each tour group customer individually, answering questions that should have been re-directed to the tour guide or the concierge. And yes, front desk staff knew we were in line, as I asked the concierge if there was a faster check-in process available for us (there was not). If the Four Seasons continues as a TOUR GROUP hotel, (I suspect it may as the hotel lobby and bar were not busy other than with tour group members) I suggest it address ways to better handle tour group check-ins. (PS: a tray of perishable tea sandwiches that went to waste because we were not in our room when they were delivered and we had already eaten before we returned to the room for the night, did not compensate for the check-in experience.)
The check-in set the tone for the stay.

Concierge Staff: were outstanding with getting us a rental car and suggesting restaurants.

Some front desk staff: went out of their way to accommodate us. They are the reason we choose to stay at the Ritz, Four Seasons and other top tier hotels at least once during each trip.

Door staff: outstanding.

Location: really far removed from the sights we came to see. Unlike others on this site who speak of 5 Euro taxi rides, ours were 10-12 Euro taxi rides, each way. And for most places, especially in the rain, you need a taxi. We are walkers and walk 5-8 miles a day on vacation, but the hills and the distance from the hotel and the rain meant we took taxis. On the basis of location alone, I would choose a different hotel for a sightseeing base. For the business traveler, the location is likely not an issue. And having just seen Retiro Park in Madrid and the gardens in Cordoba and Seville, I thought Eduardo Park was illl-kept and uninspiring. So the view of and proximity to the park did not add to my experience of the Four Seasons.

Expense of bar, food: We know that nice restaurants and good food can be expensive, but the prices at the Four Season were very hefty. Due to the distance to other restaurants ( and taking into account the roundtrip price of the taxi added in) and that we would need to venture out at night into the rain, we did eat here. I cannot remember the food or the wine. But I do remember the price; truly memorable tabs.

Lobby: dated decor. No romance; no eye-candy.

I was really impressed by the service at the FS Lisboa. It is definitely a 5 star hotel in a great location to explore Lisbon. The spa and the exercise facilities are amazing. Breakfast was great and they were very generous attentive with my son.

Dear TVMD,

Thank you for your wonderful review and such kind comments on our hotel. We're very happy to know you were "treated like royalty" and that you found our location, spa & rooftop fitness facilities "amazing". Our service is something we take great pride in and we're happy that we impressed you, and of course our little guests are just as important as our big guests and we're glad to hear your son was well taken care of.

We hope to see you again soon,

Obrigado!

The hotel is absolutely gorgeous and our suite was superb, with all the comforts one could want. Breakfast in the restaurant adjoining the terrace (dine inside or out) was an experience to savor. Stunningly beautiful room, superb service, enormous buffet with everything you can imagine wanting for breakfast, whatever your origins. The bar was graciously managed and staffed. We were always greeted by name. Our only nit-pick is that our room was not cool enough for us the first day - we really like our AC - but they fixed it promptly and we had no further problem.

Great Location both for business and for being close to the main areas. The hotel is huge ..wide open spaces , large corridors and massive rooms. The staff was exceptionally hospitable . The breakfast was good. The bathrooms seems to be too expansive for any good reasons. The shower room was tight which is in my opinion , can be upgraded. All in all though a dated hotel but with Four Seasons class

Dear ZMR,

Thank you for your review which reflects that you did enjoy your stay in our property. Evidently, this hotel is considered "La Grande Dame" of Portugal for its history, Classic Style and superb service by a team of true professional in delivering service at a high level.
Your only observation on the shower cabin size is understood as for individuals as big as myself (6"3') seem slightly tight but can move without any limitations. And being compensated by an extremely large bathrooma nd guestrooms, makes it worth staying here.

Sincerely,
Ricardo Acevedo

This beautiful, stylish and well maintained luxury property satisfies every expectation. From the friendly welcome by bellmen to the professional, helpful and very efficient front desk folks, to the hardworking housekeeping ladies, and to the restaurant wait staff it is obvious that management is focused on guest satisfaction and that they have been successful in transmitting that philosophy to their employees.

A great property, by itself, does not translate into a superior guest experience. It is the people who run it, their attitude, their competency, their attentiveness and their genuine desire to please, that differentiate it from the ordinary. We were exposed to both during our 2 day experience here in May.

Dining tip: Ask the concierge for directions to the Monte Everest restaurant just 2 blocks from the hotel. A wonderful blend of Nepalese and Indian food served in an intimate atmosphere by knowledgeable, attentive and enthusiast personnel, all while being very reasonably priced.

Exercise tip: Take a stroll around the huge Eduardo VII park, just a block from the hotel. Beautifully landscaped and with wide pathways, this is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Splendid environment to spend an hour or two to people watch, commune with nature and to gain some exercise.

Room Tip: Views in most directions are wonderful so just ask for a higher up floor.

We stayed for 3 nights with our tour group. The room was very spacious and comfortable and from the higher floors you have a great view of King Edward Park and one of the more prominent traffic circles with a giant statue. One night, after the Lisbon football team won the Portugese Cup, there was a big peaceful demonstration at the circle which was fun to watch from the hotel. The hotel is a 5 euro cab ride from central city. One advantage of this location is that it a 20 minute walk from the Gulberkian Museum, a must see in Lisbon. My wife and I took advantage of the spa and indoor pool which were as good as you can get at a top end hotel. We were very fortunate to have able to stay here with our tour group.

.

Room Tip: The higher up the better.
