“A holiday Inn...”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

I don't know why it is but the Holiday Inns that I have stayed in in Southern Europe in recent years just haven't inspired me - possible exception of Belgrade (but that was a first time in that city, so couldn't make comparisons). This one, Madrid by Real Madrid, Milan Lorenteggio - much of a muchness. They are in business locations; I'm a business traveller, but maybe like different things. They are maybe all of a certain age - fairly modern but possibly in need of update/

You know you are going to get a clean room, a reasonable size. And sure, it is. The rates are OK.

SO - this one. Reception / Concierge just fine. I arrived a little early and a room wasn't available, but that's understandable. No problem doing the paperwork then my sorting my bag out, and leaving it, then coming back quite a bit later. English spoken in reception not a problem (which is good - as Portuguese is not a talent for me).

When I got to my room it was comfortable - Holiday Inn beds always seem pretty good. Bath and shower all they needed to be for your average (1.8m 6' or less) person, although for me I have to crouch to get under the shower, and the ceiling feels uncomfortably close to your head when standing up for it. That's harder to fix, and a basic problem with having the shower above a bath for hotels. These days I rather prefer shower only.

Metro station is handy - for those that know the Lisbon Metro it is on the Yellow line so you will typically need to change if you want to get right down to most of the city centre (or, for that matter, the airport, but no big deal). Actually on the subject of the metro and the airport, the hotel is really pretty close to the airport, but it's quite a long way on the metro. A cab would almost certainly be quicker, but it's not a bad journey, and at €1.40 or so it's cheap.

I'm always pleased to find coffee making facilities in my room. In fact, I'll deliberately avoid hotels that DON'T provide it. Remember this. However, HI Lisbon Continental - only half a good mark for this. It's a double room (albeit booked for single occupancy) - what is the point of providing just ONE sachet of regular coffee, one of decaffeinated coffee and two teabags??? Oh and there were two cups, so one assumes they shortchange dual occupancies on their morning caffeine. I want a coffee before I go to breakfast - and actually if you don't provide one, I'll probably not even have a hotel breakfast, because I will go outside and look for coffee... That's a sell-up gone sour.

The WiFi - has possibly changed since previous reviewers, or I was at least partly lucky. It was rock solid for my laptop in my hotel room, although an iPhone dropped the signal quite often for unknown reasons.

I'd certainly not be worried about returning to this hotel, but it wasn't good enough to make me think I'd not look somewhere else first.

Room Tip: None of the rooms are likely to have great views because of the location. I was facing away from the...

Stayed in this hotel for 10 days & faced aircon problem for 2 times. Hotel is very old & equipment keep on failing regularly. One of my colleague also staying in the other room & his room electricity failed. So problems keep on happening. Horrendous breakfast & they keep on repeating the same menu everyday in the name of 'American Breakfast'. Walkable from metro station which indeed is very helpful.

Just recently returned from a five night stay at this hotel in Lisbon.

I am happy to report that the hotel is very nice and clean, and very convenient to the nearby Campo Pequeno metro station for access to downtown area. Reception were extremely helpful at all times, checking and making calls for me. Nothing was too much trouble. All staff were friendly and helpful!

The breakfast was plentiful too. Once again attended to by helpful and efficient staff

If, like me....and you don't have wifi on anything, internet access can be purchased from reception, behind where there are two computer terminals

Rooms were great and cleaned to a high standard each day

An enjoyable stay.....thank you!

This Holiday Inn is located near the old bull ring, these days converted into an arena and shopping centre. There's a metro station there for easy access to the centre of Lisbon (which is quite a way away to the south). The hotel is located in a business area and the surroundings were pretty quiet over the weekend I stayed there!

I'd booked two rooms a month in advance. Unfortunately the rooms were allocated upon arrival, meaning the two rooms weren't next to each other (one of my bugbears - if you book two rooms that far in advance surely the system could allocate two next to each other!)

Initially the rooms were on different floors, but after a bit of tapping on a computer the check-in assistant offered two on the same floor - one at the end of the corridor, the other in the middle.

The rooms were surprisingly large for a city location, as wide as they were deep. They were clean and the beds were comfortable.

Aside from the rooms being a distance apart, the only other niggle was the parking - it has some *very* tight turns to get into the underground carpark and people seem to barrel down there without thinking that someone could be coming in the opposite direction! We had to reverse back down when leaving on the last day, despite signs saying to give way to traffic leaving the carpark.

This property offered the standard platinum benefit of a snack/drink voucher or 500 points. A copy of Friday's "business life" paper was left in my room on Sunday morning, but aside from that no other perks were offered.

Overall, this was a decent hotel.

Stayed here for 3 nights with my husband. From check in to check out everything was great. Lovely room friendly staff and good food. 2 minute walk to metro or under 10 euros in taxi to the centre of Lisbon. Beautiful city well worth seeing from open top bus tour. Would highly recommend this hotel and would certainly return.
