“Good, comfortable hotel.”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

My sister and I have just returned from a pleasant 9 day stay at this hotel. We liked the fact that it was away from the centre and found it quite easy to walk to the metro station at the zoo in the mornings. We also took advantage of the free open top bus pick up several times. We liked the traditional style of the hotel and our room was excellent - a good size, plenty of storage space , beds were comfortable and we had everything we needed. Staff were friendly and professional at all times. We found it very convenient having the 24 hour shop behind reception where you could purchase drinks and snacks.

The hotel is very busy, as it is popular with large tour groups, but the staff are very well organised, so we didn't have any issues. Our room was on the 9th floor and we couldn't hear the road with the balcony door closed. The hotel is on the flight path, but most of Lisbon seems to be and we did not find it disruptive.

As other reviews have mentioned, there is renovation work going on within the hotel, which seemed to start before 8:30am and finish at about 8 pm. They were obviously trying to work as quietly as possible and we were not too bothered by it, because we were out exploring all day. However, the drilling, banging etc were a little annoying when you returned tired after a long day of exploring and just wanted to relax. We were surprised that they had chosen to renovate during the summer months.

Despite this, the staff were doing their best to minimise disruption and we still enjoyed our time in Lisbon. We would happily stay here again once the renovations are completed.

Room Tip: High rooms facing the pool have good views.

The staff is so nice but the lounge is the worst marriottt lounge i have ever been in. 4 nights in a row the hot snack is fish. They run out of cold drinks half the time. The rest of the snacks are barely edible. No bottles of water to take back to your room.

The restaurant downstairs is very expensive and horrible food. My friend got a pasta dish that had more half cooked bacon than pasta in it. I got a grill steak that first came raw and the after I sent it back was the worst piece of beef I have ever tried to eat. The waiters are idiots, sorry.

The gym is pretty bad also, smells musty.

The swimming pool is great.

The good things are the 24 hour store you can buy drinks and snacks. Room service price includes all taxes and service charges so you know what it will cost. Maids are super friendly and helpfull.

I had requested a quiet room when booking and was allocated one which overlooked a busy motorway. We requested a change of room and were accommodated no problem, got a nice room overlooking the pool area, very quiet. HOWEVER Monday morning came and along with it the drilling and the same every morning after that. We requested a change of room again and were accommodated happily by the staff who even comped our meal from the night before, which was proper order I thought. But unfortunately we were woken up again by the drilling this morning. It seems inescapable, granted it is not as bad but you still wake up to it. I have complained twice at this stage and have received apologies on both occasions from a very competent front of house manager but regrettably that does nothing for the pain in my head. I get one holiday a year and can't get a lie in. More annoying than this is I can't get an answer either. Why is there renovation work being carried out in high season, why wasn't it done in the winter AND why is it being done in the morning Why can't it be done during the daytime, the hotel seems relatively quiet during the day with most people out or at the pool. Originally I thought the work must have something to do with water or electricity, where there may be a reason for the timing but this isn't the case.
Again we requested a quiet room and should have been told about this work beforehand in an email or even at check- in. I haven't even seen a Sorry for the inconvenience sign.
It's a nice hotel, rooms are lovely, good staff, good breakfast, really nice BBQ fish in the evening and all would be perfect except this.
I have been told to expect it again tomorrow
Thanks for the heads-up

Stayed only one night in August of 2014. If you are driving, it's a bit difficult to find the entrance to the hotel. Room was clean and comfortable but old with no WIFI. Restaurant was way overpriced and the food was mediocre at best. The bar was nice but also overpriced, (one average Portuguese brandy-CRF and one small bottle of mineral water cost $12 euros). The staff was very friendly and helpful.

decor is out of date, typical 1970's confortable but way too old style, no WIFI in the rooms, even Mc Donald does better.... no room service breakfast despite not being in a group!! breakfast was included in the booking.com price... but not in the room.... so ancient.... go to Novotel you get both above services and with a smile...... and on top of that.... when lying at the pool if you are bored you can count the planes going by... it will keep you busy all day, the hotel is on a flying path... charming.... and the location of the hotel is.. out of town... when i asked the receptionst are we far from the center... he looked at me and said.. yes... but not so far with a taxi....

It is a very good hotel if you need a hotel nearby Lisbon airport and US embasy. There is no transportation station nearby, no supermarket and no grocery. However it is very pleasant property, good and sufficient variety breakfast and spacious rooms. Try to avoid opening the door to the balcony since the nearby highway is very noisy and the balcony walls and ceiling are very neglected. The noise is not heard inside the room. The elevators are very quick. The staff is very friendly. Its far clocation is the only minus being so far from everything except the airport and the US embasy or as being nearby clinic. WiFi is available only in public area and free.

We arrived to this hotel from Lisbon airport and taxi driver took... 23 Euros from us for 10 min ride. I was reading previous reviews and therefore expected to be charged no more than 8-10 Euros but the driver was unshaken. I asked concierge if that was fair price, he said no and started challenging the driver who reluctantly returned us just 5 Euros. Later we were advised that when you ask for a receipt they charge you normal price so here is the tip. Check in was swift with very polite tall, young man, they had upgrade arranged to executive room with the access to the lounge for gold member. Further upgrade to junior suite was only possible with the extra charge of 80 Euros per night. My daughter received some crayons and coloring paper, which she was delighted with. Concierge has helped to bring the luggage to our room and arranged for the fixed price taxi for long journey, which was very reliable. We had room on 15th floor with pool view but we could still hear traffic noise from nearby motorways. Aircon was blowing very cold air, a bit too cold for me so we were sleeping with fan off and balcony door closed, which was not ideal. However there was absolutely no noise from nearby rooms and this I appreciated more. Hotel is very large tall building but the staff still tries hard to treat each guests individually. Room is a bit dated but quite clean, nothing too special, average Marriott. They provided water and apples on arrival. Two double beds are on the small side though. Pool area has an access from the LG, provides towels and is next to the restaurant. Breakfast was plentiful, the choice was much more then in other hotels. A real highlight of this hotel is by no means executive lounge with very outstanding staff member - Rita. She was an excellent host looking after us each evening and my daughter has built immediate affection to her. Rita is a real treasure to this well run lounge, lovely down to earth lady and we are looking forward to seeing her during our next visit to the hotel. Drinks and hot snacks are available from 5.30 to 7.30 pm. Lounge is much larger then the other ones we have visited. Excellent place to relax after whole day of sightseeing. We did not find the walk to the metro station too much at all. Daily travel card cost 6 Euros and it is few stops to Baixa. The only unpleasant incident has happened to us upon check out when they have added breakfast to the bill although it is included for gold. It was because we had it in the restaurant not the lounge, this rule was new to us despite staying in many Marriott properties. Nobody told us at the check in we cannot go to the restaurant to avoid the charge. Young lady with long hair became rather rude but we did not give up so we she consulted more senior front desk member and was told to waive it. Again concierge has helped to put the luggage to the taxi and we left quite happy. The weekend rate we paid was much less then in many other European capitals. Overall we will return for Rita in the lounge and lovely concierge service.

Room Tip: the higher floor the better but these are more expensive
