“very disappointed”
Reviewed 25 October 2011

We booked the hotel mainly for it's view and had sent accordingly a request to the hotel beforehand to make sure we would get a room with a view. However, when we arrived the rather unfriendly guy manning the reception told us we had a room to the back and that there was nothing else available. We asked if he could check if there was something to the front the next day. However, we were told that - as we had booked our room through booking.com and not with him directly - we were not entitled to a room to the front. Anyone booking through some website other than the hotel directly would be placed to the back (a rather noisy street). He was very rude. So we decided to only stay one night and then leave in the morning for another hotel. The breakfast was also horrible. Hardly any choice and the coffee was certainly the worst I ever tasted. I cannot understand how that place gets 4 stars.

As most of the other reviewers correctly point out the views from the hotel room are amazing. However the room is so tiny there isn't even room to sit and enjoy the view. We booked a double room and got two single beds pushed together. The en suite is clean but very old with a shower that should have been replaced 20 years ago. For what we paid (€130 per night in October) we could have gotten a much nicer hotel. If you get a good price or perhaps if only staying one night, this hotel might be worth a look. Otherwise, book a nicer hotel and take the 15 minute stroll from the city center to enjoy the views for free!

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel -- it was in a great area -- just north of Alfama on a hilltop affording magnificent views of the city -- in Graca. It was very close to tram 28 yet also walkable to the center of all of the action. The neighborhood is transitional, but felt safe. Because it is just out of the center, it is very quiet. The rooms were a good size and very clean. We had a little balcony which was great -- we could open the doors for air and sit outside viewing the city. The restaurant on the top floor had incredible views and the food and service were excellent. It was nice in the evening to go to the bar and relax with a beer. It is an easy walk to the castle and many other sights from here. It is not a 5-star hotel with all of the amenities, but it was perfect and had everything that we needed. Room has a safe and plenty of closet and drawer space. Bathroom was small, but fine.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the river and the downtown.

We spent two nights at this hotel and although the rooms were quite small and in need of a refurbishment, once the shutters were opened and you seen the view you realised where your money was going.

Excellent views over Lisbon and the red topped buildings with the castle straight ahead of you. No need to go and check out all the view points around the city when you can just open your curtains and see nearly all the sights from your window.

The beds were comfy, the bathroom small and the shower needed upgrading but with a refurbishment this hotel could charge twice the amount per night given the location. If you had the same room without the view then it is worth no more than half what they charge per night.

Breakfast was ok but nothing to get excited about. Cereal, croissants, meat, cheese, rolls, coffee and pastries basically. The bar area at the top of the hotel is where you eat and it has a nice terrace with those views though.

Note that if you go for a room with a terrace these are on the lowest level of the hotel (which makes sense) but the view will be hampered by two ugly buildings on the road opposite. Unless you really want the terrace (which is very pretty don’t get me wrong) I would stick to a room on the city side with the fantastic view.

Lisbon is stunning in many ways but also quite run down at the same time. Alfama and Graca are very picturesque with pretty streets nestled around the castle. A lot of nice cafes and bars in the Chiado and Barrio Alto areas but you will be stung big time for food and drinks in the Baixa region. 8 Euros for a large beer on the Rue Da Augusta? Generally Portugal is expensive considering how cheap it is to get there.

The coffee and pastries culture of the Portuguese is so addictive though. Anytime of day they pop in for a quick espresso and custard tart and on their way again. A far cry from a Gregg’s macaroni pie and can of coke on the move in the UK.

There were times where we felt we had to watch where we were going and watch what streets we were taking but I guess every capital city has areas like that even in the centre. Perhaps we are spoilt living in Edinburgh but the botanical gardens were not worth the walk and very disappointing to be honest. Think twice about climbing the hills and paying to get in for what was a very poorly kept area. We’d seen one gardener the whole way round. It was nice to get a bit of shade though it has to be said and it was relatively quiet.

I’ve not added pictures of the hotel as the ones already there say it all. Really liked Lisbon and would thoroughly recommend a visit! Is the Albergaria Senhora Do Monte worth 90 Euro’s a night though? For the spectacular view only!

Room Tip: Obviously get a room with a view. Pointless getting one facing the street all that way up the highe...

What makes this hotel special is that it’s situated in one of the highest points of Lisbon, but still only 15 min away from downtown by Tram 28 that has a stop two blocks right from the Hotel. If you get a room facing river and downtown you get a fabulous morning and evening view, which are hardly measurable by money. Saying that the list prices they ask are completely up the roof – 200 € for double and 375 € for a suite with balcony. We paid 85 € a night for double and stayed 5 nights, that price was very ok for what we got.

Hotel itself is judging with Finnish standards quite common three star hotel. There’s 28 rooms, lobby and small bar at the top floor serving breakfast and (expensive) drinks till midnight if needed. Rooms are small but everything you need is there, and who spends time in hotel room anyways during vacation. Rooms have quiet air con but Lisbon nights tend to be quite brisk even during summertime so you may not need it at all.

Hotel is really badly soundproofed, you can hear yawning from other rooms and once people start arriving to breakfast you can hear chairs scratching floor from 3 floors up. Again saying that if you have normal rhythm and go to bed around 23 and wake up around 8 that’s really not an issue because during the nighttime the hotel is completely silent, no discos or traffic noises or anything to bother your sleep.

There are no minibars in rooms, which may be a downside if you like to sip a cold beer while watching city lights from your window. Quite big Supermarket “Pingo Doce” in Rua da Graca 98- 100 (app 200 m from hotel) sells bags of ice for 1€ placed next to ice cream. Put a plastic bag filled with whatever you want to drink to your bide, cover drinks with ice and close the bag. Soon you’ll have ice cold drinks for next 5-6 hours :o)

The breakfast is included in the price of the room. Breakfast is nothing fancy but it takes you to late afternoon easily. You get bread, cheese, ham, butter, pastries, marmalade, jelly, 2 types of cereals, coffee, tea and some fruits, usually melons and bananas. Wall facing town in breakfast room is all window wall so the view to town is magnificent.

The hotel staff recommends closest Italian restaurant they can point from the window. I take it they recommend it simply because it’s easy to point. Unfortunately it’s a high-end restaurant where meals vary from 30 € to 75 €. If you arrive late and want to spend 300 € during first meal go ahead, but if that’s not your idea of a decent bill just walk two blocks right to Rua de Graca and you’ll find several small local restaurants selling very ok meals for 7-9 €, and the atmosphere in those is really authentic.

To summarize if you value the way you want to wake up and fall asleep and don’t mind travelling a little to your hotel we highly recommend this hotel as a place to stay.

Yes, the view is definitely the best in LIsbon, Next to the miradouro ALbergaria Senhora Do Monte. The hotel is located in Graca, very quite, less touristic yet very central area. Tram 28 is 7 mins of walk away from the hotel. Alfama can be reached by foot in about 10 mins. So the location is very central.

However, i wouldnt say that the interior quality as well as service of the hotel would equal a four star hotel. I have stayed in various 4-5 star hotels in Lisbon and can not compare their quality with this one. The reception/lobby area is very small, old. The receptionists are not smiling at you at all, answering your questions in a very bored attitude. The rooms are clean but quite old, especially the bathroom. The breakfast area has a stunning view of the city but again the quality of the breakfast is only OK. There are better hotels for this price in Lisbon. ANd the views you can see from the miradouros the whole day long for free..

We (35 and 45) stayed at the hotel mid-March; we bargained for a room with the view and got a large, clean room with a fantastic terrace and a superb view of down-town Lisb for 70 euros a night. The staf was friendly, natural and helpfull. I got my shirt washed and trousers shortened in no time for a modest charge. The area is great, lots of nice restaurants (check the Chapito-venue, a short taxi ride from the hotel). The hotel is a 10 min walk down to the centre. The bartender at the top floor will become your unimposing friend if you want. Excellent choice if you want a small, cosy and reasonable stay with a touch of extra (the view and the staf). Brekafast ok. We will be back. Lisboa and the area have great things to offer (If you want a unique look at the history of civilisation through artifacts , a visit to Gulbenkian museum is a must). Sintra is magical.

Room Tip: bargain for a balcony
