Nice hotel.

Checkin and out: Efficient and friendly.

Room: Good bed, had a good sleep. Room is more living room at home, doesn't feel like a hotel.

Location: Fantastic. Easy to get there, also easy to be picked up.

Overall: Very good value for your money. Friendly staff. It is not high scale, it is what you need.

The hotel is very easy to find from the Rato metro station. As you exit the stairs, look to your left. Provided a fruit vendor is not blocking the view down Rua da Escola Politecnica, you will immediately see the yellow exterior.

Inside, the rooms are individually decorated and very clean. Azulejo (the blue and white tiles of Portugal) line the main staircase and decorate the first floor dining room.

Breakfast is reasonably good, but the coffee is not, which we found surprising considering how seriously the Portuguese take their coffee!

Wi-fi is available but really only works in the common areas. If you stay on the ground floor, hope that you do not have night owls or early risers above you as the thumping of feet is quite loud.

1 out of 3 of the front desk staff spoke reasonably good English, which presented a few small difficulties, especially when asking for towels (he thought I was asking for beer?).

Overall, I would recommend this hotel because it was clean, welcoming and felt safe.

Room Tip: Pick a room at the back, preferably not the ground floor.

Right at the edge of the touristic area, but still calm, in a good location, you can find Casa De Sao Mamede. It is a small hotel, with uniquely decorated rooms of different size. Friendly staff, that speaks partly only poor English, however you can always get along with everyone. We had a small room with bathroom, both were in good shape and clean. Breakfast is down to Earth - chees, ham, some fruits, yoghurt, bread and of course pastel:). Nothing really more that one would have at home, but it is enough to start the day (especially in a country, in which breakfast is really not the main meal.)
If you'd like to see something more of Lisbon than Barrio Alto and the main attractions, book a room here and start taking a walk in every directions - you will not regret it!

We spent most of our two week Lisbon holiday at Casa De Sao Mamede and would certainly choose it again if/when we return. It is conveniently located near a Metro station, and you can also walk to other neighborhoods (we walked to the waterfront, the Baixa, through Bairro Alto, and to the area near parque eduardo vii). The hotel is welcoming and comfortable, and the staff friendly and speak English. Our room(s) had windows with views of the city beyond and were convenient for checking the weather each morning! Breakfast was good; the dining room also had window seating overlooking the neighborhood. The only drawback was that the free WiFi didn't always extend to our top floor room.

Casa De Sao Mamede is an attractive, pleasant and comfortable hotel in a charming neighborhood in Lisbon. The staff at the front desk were friendly, helpful and spoke excellent English. (And they pointed us to Couto--our very favorite restaurant in Lisbon for dinner.) Our room was small but very nicely furnished.(If there was any drawback at all it was that the mattress was quite firm.) Breakfast was good and served in a pretty dining room overlooking the leafy green square across the street. We got a very reasonable rate booking through Booking.com. All in all this was a very pleasant place to stay in central Lisbon.

What a find, a lovely hotel with good size rooms and bathrooms all fairly recently done up. Friendly helpful staff and a great location to get to everything from Breakfast was a cold buffet and was good for a 3* hotel. The mattress maybe a little too firm for some?

Beautiful old house once belonged to a magistrate. Charming rooms, recently upgraded and perfect position to tour Lisbon in Bairro Alto. No elevator. Good breakfast with wide choice in a charming first floor room. Helpful and friendly staff.

Room Tip: ground floor rooms if you have heavy bags. Family rooms are on thrid floor only

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
"Casa de Sao Mamede" is a small family hotel (26 rooms). Built in the XVIIIth century as the residence of a magistrate. This beautiful building has maintained all the charm of an old family home. It is one of the first buildings to be constructed in the traditional system of "birdcage" - earthquake proof construction used after earthquake of 1755. Having been adapted to a hotel unit in 1948 it knew how to keep throughout the years, the treatment, the tradition and the atmosphere of a true family house. Always trying to preserve the past we did not relinquish however the comfort requirements that contemporary life demands so all the rooms have: private bathroom, telephone, digital safe, satellite television, double glass and air-conditioned with individual command. The fact that we're dealing with a small hotel type unit allow us to grant a more personalized treatment to each customer. ... more   less
