“Great hotel”
Reviewed 17 February 2009

Loved this hotel....great location, clean and friendly staff...at an unbeatable price. Our stay here was better than the much more expensive Hotel Colon (horrible service) in Barcelona.

This hotel was pretty basic but clean and comfortable. Not for you if you need room service/mini bar etc. but it was perfect for us.

The location is great, on a pedestrianised street with loads of restaurants - the hawkers didn't bother us, they were always polite, never pushy. Try Bom Jardim just around the corner for piri piri chicken. Also Coliseu Cafe opposite where we had our dinner on New Year's Eve - very trendy!

Just down the road is Rossio Square and around the corner from the hotel to the left is Restauradores - get the metro from here.

Breakfast was ok - what can you expect for €60 per night??

One gripe - the glass door to the bathroom - you need to be familiar with the person holidaying with you otherwise this could be a bit embarrassing!!!

How much you like this hotel will likely depend on which room you get. I started with a double (since the prices were so good). The room was only a little bigger than the bed, but the bathroom had recently undergone an excellent renovation. However, a bank of AC units were just outside the window, and I couldn’t sleep until they turned off (which might never happen in the summer!). Also, my room looked directly across to the breakfast room - quite a shock when you open the drapes in the morning!

My second room was a single. Again, the room was just big enough for the bed, which was narrower and too short for anyone over about 5 and a half feet. The bathroom had not been renovated as recently, and the sink taps dripped. The small balcony was totally obscured by greenery.

The location was excellent, just off the Praca dos Restauradores, with easy access to metro, bus, Rossio station, the funicular to the Bairro Alto, and the Baixa. However, big crowds gather in front of the hotel on nights when the theater directly across has shows, which might be a problem if you have a room at the front.

The PC used to provide Internet access was non-functional each of the five nights I stayed. Breakfast was disappointing with watery juice and burnt, bitter-tasting coffee. I was not as happy with this hotel as I had expected, but it might be hard to beat the combination of location and price.

Booked on line, Rooms turned out to be excellent, good breakfast, TV and Wireless broadband available free. Rooms in November were 40.00 Euro per night. Rooms were in excellent condition, possibly recently refurbished and spotless. Good En--Suite.
Located with easy reach of Metro and tram. Street outside is full of Restaurants. Staff were very helpful including the excellent Manuel, Luckily 'Basil' wasnt on duty any of the nights!
The 81 Bus passes nearby for access to the Airport. Taxi ride to the Airport is only about 9.00 Euro. Please ask taxi driver the price in advance. Overall a very good, well run Hotel which belies its very reasonable prices. For those who value cleanliness also the Hotel was imacculate and regularly cleaned, sheets and towels were changed regularly.

We stayed here for 4 nights at the end of November, paying 60 Euros/ night for a double room. The room was big enough, the bed comfortable, the bathroom clean and spacious. We were at the front of the hotel but neither of us had any issue with street noise (mind you, Lisbon as a whole was pretty quiet that week). It was cold in Lisbon but the room heating worked fine!! The staff were friendly and spoke English (in fact, everyone in Lisbon was friendly). The breakfast is not wonderful, especially the coffee which is more German in style, but honestly, at that price, we didn't expect much and it is sufficient to get you to one of the many many cafes for a mid morning break. Probably not enough to start a long business day on however, I booked the hotel based on the reviews on tripadvisor and didn't pay much attention to the location, hence we were very pleasantly surprised to find it was excellently located for the airport bus, the metro, the elevadors and just about anything a tourist might need. I would recommend this hotel if you want something that meets all the needs without being plush/expensive.

We choose this hotel after reading such positive reviews on Trip Advisor and we were not disappointed.
As most people agree, it provides good value for money and is in a great location for seeing the sites. The hotel staff are pleasant and helpful.
The property is situated in a pedestrian street full of restaurants, so finding somewhere to eat is not a problem.
Train, metro and buses are all close by. A taxi from the airport takes approx. 20 mins.
If you are into modern art then you may well be disappointed by the Gulbenkian modern art annex. Its many a year since I've seen a collection displayed in such an uninspired manner! Give it a miss.

  • Liked — Good central location
  • Disliked — Despite having upgraded to a deluxe room, this was not overly large, although the view was great.
