We chose this place because it was packed and because they did not have an English menu so we hoped it would be local. I'm no expert on portuguese food bur it seemed decent to me. We had the sausage, some calamari, a tuna salad, some croquettes and a jug of wine for €30 which we thought was reasonable. The service was great despite the busyness and they were happy to explain the local dishes.

The place caught our eye because fado was advertised and we were looking for someplace that would not overcharge for awful food just to listen to Fado. The restaurant is down the hill from the Fado bar. It was packed, generally a good sign, but we realized most were tourists with some guide book in their hand to get them there. The house vinho verde was passable. The chorizo (grilled sausage) was inedible. A steak knife could not cut it and it was too chewy to eat. The grilled shrimp in garlic sauce was shell on, unlike the place we went to the night before (O Ramiro). The shrimp was not cleaned and was soft, a sign of poorly stored or poorly cooked shrimp. The pork and clams, a Lisbon speciality, was much better two nights ago at a different place. The pork was tough and overcooked, the sauce insufficient, the fries soggy, and there were only 3 baby clams on the plate. Over all the 35E meal was awful. A waste of money.

After dinner, we wandered up the road to the companion bar for Fado - well worth it. Might not be the best fado, but I am no judge as I am not Portuguese. We saw several performers, some of them quite good, while having house wine and a plate of cheese, all fo 16E and no cover for the music. Skip the restaurant all together and grab some wine and cheese with fado up the hill - a much better deal. We should have saved the 35 E for the dinner.

The usual grilled fish dishes luke everywhere else, with a relatively small selection of wines and fish. The service isn't great, but it seems to be geared towards it's French customers.
