My wife and I greatly enjoyed our recent stay at the very economical Pensao Portuense. It had the best of locations: restaurants, cafes and shops were within walking distance on lively pedestrian streets, and important sites were easily accessible. A satisfying breakfast of juice, coffee, toast, rolls and jelly was available every morning, a great convenience. Everything in the hotel was immaculately clean, and its quietness ensured a good night's sleep.

Most of all we appreciated and were impressed by the accommodating manner of the intelligent management, the brothers Sadiq and Hussein. All of our questions were patiently, quickly and accurately answered. Further, they obtained and printed our airline boarding passes without our even asking them to do so! The entire staff went above and beyond expectations. Staying at the Pensao Portuense contributed to easing the anxiety of being a tourist and to our pleasure of being in Lisbon.

Pretty good hotel in the city center- walking distance from the many sights in the city. Whats good : lift, nice simple breakfast, well designed/setup hotel, totally cozy windproof rooms, systematic processes, owners who're knowledgable and speak decent english esp Hussain. Whats not good: wifi only in rooms, small rooms (cramped and bed suitable only for 2).

Very simple inn in the heart of Lisbon. I had a comfortable single room which was a perfect escape from the busy streets of the city. The room was comfortable, clean and just what I needed. Skip the breakfast and grab a pastel de nata at a nearby cafe.

Recently spent 5 nights here and have to say I couldn't fault the place. Centrally located, reasonable, very friendly and spotlessly clean. If like me you just want a comfy bed to rest your head at the end of a day's sightseeing, air conditioning, a decent shower and coffee and toast to get you started in the morning, this is the place to stay.

located behind the Hard Rock Cafe near Rossio Square. it is near a Metro station, steps from the start of a lot of restaurants. about 10 min walk across the square and up the hill (or via street car / elevator when operating) to "Bairro Alto" Lisbon's night life (bars, restaurants).
single room is extremely small, and i have been to many small hotels in Europe. You only get 1 small bar of soap and 2 small towels. no shampoo. no soap for shower. shower head was sparying water above the shower door and all over the room. wall A/C was adequate for the weather at that time, may be insufficient during hotter times. rude staff. terrible breakfast i didn't even bother to eat. room door could have been pushed open by a 5 year old. i could see hallway through gaps in the door frame. but they lock up the front door at night and you have to buzz in.

places to see: i liked Fado at "Luso" in Bairro Alto. a bit fancy, not too fancy. 5 good singers. 16 euro minimum per person but you can get nice size sangria pitcher worth 2-3 glasses. only drawback is long pauses between performers. to see all 5 you'll have to stay a couple of hours.
also near Luso is "Bali Bar" a small place with good live high energy dance music. when it closes around midnight weeknights, go accross street to Bali Lounge for free. Also across from Bali is "Allface Hall" a small place but really good Jazz music. man other nice places there i am sure.

i liked food at "Alfaia" restaurant and "28 Tapas Bar" in Bairro Alto. "Perola" restaurant near the hotel was good. Seafood across the river near boat station / Cristo Rei statue was good and inexpensive for Europe. Cafe Nicola was good for coffe and dessert. didn't try the food. they have music too sometimes. Nicola was near the Theatre i think, below the Bairro Alto.

For beach, take train towards Cascais (kash-Keysh). there are series of stops, with Cascais being the last. Cascais is a nice little town, but not the best beach. small and too many boats. I liked Carcavelos and Estoril better. buying tickets from machine was a challenge. better stand in line with agent or ask someone to help you. they are friendly but don't speak Enlgish much. buy round trip or full day tickets. for metro too, buy 24 hour tickets that are cheaper.

for sight seeing go to the Oceanarium (aquarium) near the Vasco Da Gama mall. pretty outside even if you don't go in the building, which is just another aquarium :) there is also a mid-air condola which gives you a good view of the city. i didn't try it.

Lisbon is somewhat similar to spain in climate, food, and beach, but much cheaper. be prepared to encountered a lot of homeless street beggers. seemed harmless, but sad to see. the economy was really bad in August 2012.

This is a great hotel for seeing around Lisbon. This is a family run hotel and it is very good value. The front desk people are very helpful and very friendly. We had a room facing the street so it could be a little noisy at night, but this is was ok for us. The room was clean and the bathroom was a good size. Breakfast was basic but perfect for our needs. Our one and only problem was, there was a school trip there at the same time as us. Immagine 40 or so teenagers! They filled up the breakfast room and were quite noisy coming in late at night. We would stay there again for sure and reccommend it to others.

The staff is not particularly kind (they are not rude, but they could improve a lot). Only one out of 4 was more friendly, but when we asked for a good place to eat he suggested us to go to the Derby cervecarja - less than 100 meters from the hotel - which is a terrible place. Room was clean and comfortable, but wifi is available only from the hall. The breakfast is quite basic.
