Quite plain on the outside, but the interior is spectacular. Main altar nicely decorated, but side chapels are exquisite. One in particular has many types of marble with insets of precious stones. Worth the visit.

If you like to look at the grandeur of a church then this is the place for you. With large gold lined enclaves, historic paintings, ornate sculptures and an unbelievably ornate enclave imported from Rome after being blessed by the pope you will be wowed.

It is in an unassuming building as is typical of Lisbon which makes walking in a real surprise.

We were recommended to visit this ancient church since it was one of the very few that escaped damage during the earthquake of 1755ad . The church was full of original features, lots of gold gilt and paintings. It felt very old and had a great presence.

This is an example of having inflated expectations from reading other people's reviews. While a neat church, it was not spectacular. The museum, on the other hand, was surprisingly good, far better than the majority of church museums I have seen.

If you go here, go see the nearby lookout Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara. The view is amazing, mesmerizing. They also have stalls offering food and we had a very good meal, live music and a wonderful sunset view. How good was the experience? I have been talking about possibly moving to Europe, for at least 2-3 years. My wife has been reluctant , to say the least. As we were having dinner, she came to the conclusion that this was really great and she could see living in Lisbon. Wow.

We stumbled upon this on one of our walks. I formally studied The Virgin Mary's parents, and have long wanted to find relative artworks. I was delighted to find information on Saint Anne and Joachim here. It started me on a quest to find other churches who recognise the story of this couple.
