We decided to 'do' this church as I felt that St.Vincent do Fora was a bit too far from our hotel in just a morning. We were not disappointed, as there are a few very nice golded side chapels, and the altar has some nice paintings as well. The ceiling painting is also interesting with a 'trompe l'oeil' at each end, suggesting a cupola (which in fact don't exist).

Unassuming from the exterior, but gorgeous inside. Beautifully maintained. Extremely ornate. Be sure to see the extraordinary mosaic of John the Baptist on the far left side of the church. A gem.

A beautiful church in the Bairro Alto that is well worth a visit if you are in the area. The individual churches are worth a closer look.

This church is most well-known for its ceiling, which is painted so as to mimic having two domes. The effect only works from the center of the nave, but it still worth seeing. The reliquary cases on either side of the main altar are quite interesting, though I wish they were more adequately identified.

The church also shows the use of some very interesting tile work.

Well worth a visit...and then stay for Mass!
