I am not really a puppet person--but a friend suggested this museum and it was my favorite one in Lisbon! Honestly--and Lisbon has wonderful museums. We went on a Sunday and entrance was free, and included a great live Punch and Judy style puppet shows in the Lisbon "Robertos" tradition--something that is featured at the museum.

The museum is hosted in a very nice monastery in the city centre. The exhibition starts with an interesting set of masks and puppets coming from many different places in the world, from Asia to South America, to Africa, and, of course Europe. It then continues with local puppets and traditions, entering in details about puppetry masters in Portugal. there are also many possibilities to play with puppets and related stuff, which may make children interested and happy. Great set of modern puppets and characters for stop motion movies at the end of the exhibition, very interesting both for the shape, emotional expression (and impression) and the technical aspects. Comments in English and movies are also present and interesting.

The museum is housed in an architecturally interesting historic building, a former convent. Puppets and masks are well displayed and described in discrete rooms. Videos of puppets in use in their home cultures augment the displays. Staff is very knowledgeable about exhibits and welcomes questions. Have not seen this diversity and quality elsewhere.
On a quiet street near Bairro Alto, easy metro access. Small entry fee.

There are a lot of art museums in every city. But this is something else. This museum shows collections of puppets from the whole world and wide range of history (up to the present days). I think it can be really interesting for both adults and children. And there was also a temporary exhibition devoted to creating of animated puppet films; which I liked very much.

This comprised a great exhibition of cartoons - which was free, and a permanent exhibition - cost €5. An hour was plenty for the lot, but we found it varied, well presented and enjoyable.
