What a beautiful little boutique hotel in St. Georges Castle. We were told this was once the kitchen area of the castle and it has been redirected into a beautiful boutique hotel. Now a lot of rooms and personal service way beyond expectations. The setting is marvelous and you get a real taste of old Lisbon. Cobblestone streets lead to the hotel which has service to it's doors. Once inside it is so tastefully furnished and comes complete with complimentary full service breakfast. You are always the hotels first priority. The living room is relaxing and you can see the Peacocks walk across the garden and rooftops. I would never consider staying anywhere else in Lisbon if you want to get to know the real Lisbon. Also, hire a driver who is a native of Portugal for drive you around. The natives are so proud of their heritage and they cost is extremely reasonable. We stayed here for 6 days and each day was better than the day before.

Room Tip: Any room anywhere! All are beautifully appointed and since Lisbon has so much to offer you won'...

Very nice hotel, very quiet place, extremly silent at night, friendly helpful staff, nice breakfast, possibility to stay and eat outside if nice weather, 15 minutes walk to downtown (down and uphill though)... We would choose this hotel again!

Not recommended with small children

Just came back from a weekend stay at the Solar do Castelo. As other reviewers have noted, this boutique hotel/inn is nestled within the Castelo de Sao Jorge on top of Lisbon's highest hill (all 7 of them). Its exclusivity (only 14 rooms) works for it, as the rooms open mainly to the courtyard which was at all times tranquil and pleasant. On my early arrival (before my room was ready), I was invited to refresh myself with a complimentary tea/coffee. My room was beautifully made and as others have highlighted, the complimentary (unlimited) port and Molton Brown toiletries were excellent touches. The hotel also supplied comfy slippers and robes which I usually only see in something like the Hilton - small touches that really contribute to the quality of your stay.

The overall highlight of the hotel was the decor and the sitting room - this is the main room in the lobby which opens out onto a pleasant courtyard that is inhabited (at times) by a beautifully plumed peacock. Having breakfast there, with the sunlight streaming through the wonderfully decorated room, a cup of freshly made Nespresso and some Marmalade and cheese was one of the highlights of my entire stay in Lisbon. Tranquil, gorgeous and wonderful.

The only thing I would highlight is that the Solar do Castelo is nowhere near any form of public transport (except the 737 bus which I never saw coming or going), so the mobility challenged will not like the walking up and down the hill. Luckily the walking just helped me to work up an appetite for all the pasteis, cod fishcakes, cheese and wine that I consumed on the trip. Will be back for sure.

We chose to stay at the Solar Do Castelo for a long weekend in Lisbon, seeking somewhere with a bit of character and history. In fact, it delivered this by the bucket load! Our room, while not particularly big, was comfortable and spotlessly clean. The many little touches and incredibly welcoming staff really make this place. We also thought it was great that the breakfast was available until 12 noon every day, meaning we could have a lie in if we chose. The steep walk up the cobbled roads probably aren't suitable for older or less fit people, but taxis will come right up to the door if needed (even though the roads are so narrow you might hope they don't!)

My reviews are always honest and considered. I often wonder if others are the same, about how contrived a review may actually be.

My wife and I stayed in this lovely hotel from Friday 21st October to Monday the 22nd.

We arrived to one of the the most friendly welcomes we have ever experienced in any hotel we have been to, the young lady who booked us in was helpful, friendly and informative. Within minutes we were sat in the sun in the delightful courtyard complete with peacocks, the sound of running water and my wife just came out with the title phrase. A good start, a very good start indeed.

The hotel is quaint, welcoming and interesting. Creaky wooden floors took us to one of the attic rooms which was a little smaller than we expected but with lovely views and being well appointed made our 3 nights really enjoyable.

Our cleaning lady (Anna) was friendly and always smiling,

Mariana (working on the front desk) deserves special mention. She went above and beyond to be helpful. Always busy and always smiling. Hot milk always on hand for my regular coffee and port visits to the bar.

Breakfast was how we like ours to be presented. Freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice, champagne (for a bucks fizz) was on hand. Fresh baked bread of a very high quality, meats, cheese and a couple of hot offerings too (small sausage, bacon and scrambled eggs). The fruit salad was excellent.

Despite Lisbon being a very interesting city we found ourselves spending quite a lot of time sat in the courtyard and the lounge. It was ideal to recharge after the effort of walking all morning. A couple of hours quaffing way too much port in preparation for some excellent evening meals.

There is complimentary port in the rooms, we took to ours with gusto and each morning the decanter was refilled despite the fact we emptied ours twice!

What sets this hotel apart from many others is the attention to detail (many may not see this). Watch the staff, they are attentive but blend in with the background. It surprised us how often we had used/eaten/drank something and upon our return it had already been replenished, sometimes in a matter of minutes - very understated efficiency.

Also, I am certain this hotel would be near the top, if not the top of the Trip advisor ratings if it wasn't for the silly mark down of the hotel rating by many purely for the fact the hotel is on a hill. For heavens sake - review the hotel correctly - old castles are on hills almost 100% of the time!!

Having said that we used a taxi for all our trips other than when we were around the castle. If your budget is tight then use the buses and trams which are nearby and good value.

A NOTE TO THE HOTEL MANAGER: There were only 2 things that we are able to criticise about your lovely hotel. One you can do nothing about - the noisy aeroplanes climbing at full throttle over the hotel (the majority of hotels are the same as the city is on the flight path to the nearby airport). The other - why are your pillows of such poor quality when everything else in your lovely hotel is of top quality? Spend a few Euros and get decent, plump, large pillows, not the lumpy pillows that belong in a dolls house you currently have. If it wasn't for the copious amounts of port and Vino Verde I'm certain I would not feel as relaxed as I do after returning home.

Room Tip: Use the extra pillows in the cupboard as the ones on the bed are small (1 each) and not the most com...

Spent 2 nights in early September at this gem of a hotel. At only 14 rooms no one can expect concierges & Lapa Palace style facilities, but that's not what the Solar do Castelo is aiming for. It's about a supremely relaxing experience for someone who doesn't need all the facilities (or is happy to get them elsewhere). This is a beautifully decorated inn, with great rooms, wifi, discreet & attentive service, great local knowledge, good breakfast, and the famous golf cart. The Solar do Castelo offers a simple product.....a simple product that is utterly exclusive!! I will be back....

Tranquil surroundings. Great breakfasts-- those Natas are addicting.
Only problems: not in the center of things ( need taxis or tram 28 or 12) and instead of the much mentioned peacocks, there were fearless pigeons( who stole from your plate if you left it alone in the courtyard for a second and sometimes even when you were there.)

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Solar Do Castelo is truly a romantic shelter in the birthplace of Lisbon - within the walls of São Jorge Castle at the top of Alfama. It is a small 18-century mansion surrounding a noble patio, built on the site of the former kitchens of the Royal Palace. Apart from the genuine antiques, most part of the furniture was specially designed for the hotel in a medieval contemporary style.
