We loved our stay at Solar Do Castelo. The accommodation was superb with a lovely relaxed calm atmosphere. Staff were friendly and helpful at all times. Breakfast fantastic. A brilliant location too, a quiet sanctuary amongst the hubbub of visitors to the neighbouring castle. Would definitely stay here again.

Great service and charming facilities are the hallmark of this Heritage Hotels boutique find in the Alfama area of Lisbon.
An early arrival needlessly concerned us. Like may European trips, we arrived mid morning at our destination hotel. We were surprised and delighted to be given a room key and the offer of fabulous coffee ( Nespresso) and a seat at a lovely patio table for breakfast!
Excellent service is the cornerstone of this fine hotel!

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent.

Spent 5 nights here with my wife. It is a small, quiet hotel but very comfortable - not showy luxury but getting the important things right. Goes to the top of the class for the quietest air conditioning I have experienced; with 30C outside during the day it was welcome and it could be left on quiet setting all night when needed. Bedroom (9) was spacious, with a high ceiling and a large bathroom which had lots of daylight from a large skylight. Room 9 overlooks a narrow street of houses (old like the shell of the hotel building) which is almost too narrow for vehicles so is v. quiet. Small quibble about only having foam pillows but they were not as uncomfortable as some and I appreciate some people are allergic to feathers.

The buffet breakfast is very good and with lots of choice. I enjoyed the opportunity to squeeze my own fresh orange juice and you can also eat outside in the charming modern courtyard (also a good place to relax after a day's sightseeing).

Note that the hotel is near the highest point in the city and the nearest bus stop (737 from Praca de Figuiera) is by the castle gate, about 250m or so down a fairly steep hill with uneven, cobbled surface. Also, if you arrive by taxi, it is best to give the driver a decent detailed map of the area (traffic access to the whole area is controlled by barriers which taxi drivers, local residents, the bus service and some other vehicles can operate). A large car (such as Mercedes, which some taxis are) will have difficulty getting you right to the door. The compensation is that as the only hotel within the castle walls, in a cul-de-sac, there is no passing traffic or large crowds.

Reception and other staff we encountered are friendly and helpful, booking restaurant and giving travel advice when needed. Though part of a chain based in Lisbon (Heritage Hotels), it has its own distinct identity and delivers consistently good service. The conversion and extension of old buildings has been well done with good materials and finishes.

The area has several unpretentious cafes/restaurants serving decent food at reasonable prices. Even the 'touristy' ones near the castle gate are not bad, specially when the daytime crowds have gone.

Room Tip: Room 9 on the street side is not the 'best' (i.e. most expensive) - those have balconies and...

By far the best city break hotel we have ever stayed in. It was well above and beyond our expectations. All the staff are fantastic and the free afternoon tea and cakes are something to look forward to after a long day exploring the city.
The courtyard is a great place to relax and the rooms are superb.

This is quite a lovely hotel, only about 18 rooms with most facing a courtyard, and a very large "living/dining room" used for breakfast and lounging, The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and our room was very comfortable. It is an easy, short walk down to the Rossio area using an elevator, once you get the hang of the route. And, the neighborhood is very nice in the evening once all the crowds have left. However, when arriving make sure your taxi driver knows how to get there, and bring the hotel phone number so you can call for help if needed. The area around the hotel is very congested and the streets virtually impassable in the afternoon when you are likely to arrive.

Room Tip: Some rooms have doors opening to a mini-patio, others just have windows. Most but not all overlook...

A great place. Coming from a cold country, part of the fun when on vacation is enjoying the nice weather, having breakfast outside and relaxing outside in the afternoon after a day exploring a city. Solar do Castelo is an ideal place for that. Situated on top of the hill next to the Castelo S Jorge, it has has a beautiful courtyard with a lounge sofa, and a couple of relaxing deck chairs.
Complimentary coffee and tea all day, and a honesty bar for drinks.
Rooms are clean, and well taken care off.
Staff helpful in providing tips.
When booking do ask for the map to show the taxi driver to avoid being dropped of half way the hill. Be careful for taxi scams, insist on the meter being switched on and pay what it shows. All stories they try to tell about special prices from the airport are not true.

As other reviewers mentioned, peacocks fly all over the place and they might be a bit loud in the morning.

In the vicinity of the hotel plenty of restaurants. Since this is a very touristic area, one would expect the restaurants to be tourist traps, however this is not the case, wherever we went, food was good and service friendly. Try the nata place just around the corner for a delicious sweet.

The walk down town and back is very well doable.

It is always a good sign, if you are sad to leave a hotel. This is one of those hotels. OK, it is at the top of the hill right next to the Castelo and it can be tricky to get a taxi there - but they can get there, ours did! And if you have to walk from downtown, it really isn't that far ... About twenty minutes or so at a reasonably gentle pace when the trams are all packed out. The hotel itself is beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean. Our bedroom overlooking the street of the canaries - you will understand - was spacious comfortable and charming. Breakfast in the quiet sunlit courtyard was extensive and enjoyable. Leaving coffee and cakes on a table in the lounge was very well received after a stroll back up the hill and there is an honesty bar if you need further fortification. The staff were all helpful and charming and just gave excellent service with no pretensions. It was just all round good. Many thanks to all. It would certainly be a hotel to return to. Like home.
