“A hotel of the highest class”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2013

Just back from Lisbon where we stayed at the Corinthia. We had booked a few months ago and the room rates are very reasonable for such a high standard hotel. On arriving we were taken to our room on the ninth floor. The room was spotless, had a well stocked minibar, flat screen TV and free wifi. After settling in we had a few drinks from the bar, a little bit pricey. A Hendricks Gin and tonic was €12.60! Dinner in Tipico was very good, again pricey but probably worth it.

A great sleep was ruined at 5.30am on Sunday morning when a group of French girls arrived back from the nightclubs and decided to create havoc on floor 9. Credit goes to the Duty manager who eventually calmed things down after about 45 minutes and after me complaining to him twice.

Next morning as an offer of compensation, Mr Vieira, the HR Director and in charge of Security offered us VIP treatment which included access to the Executive suite on floor 24. That certainly made up for the events of the previous evening and it was apparent that this kind of disruptive event is extremely rare in this hotel. I think the staff were genuinely angry and embarrassed at the events on Sunday morning.

Breakfast is excellent. Something for everyone. Don't plan on lunch as breakfast will keep you full till dinner time. If you pre-book then it's €16, if you turn up on the morning it's €18.

The location is great, only a ten minute, €10 taxi ride from terminal 1 and you can jump on the hop on hop off bus into Lisbon, right outside the hotel. Unlimited use for 24 hours for only €18.

Finally, the spa is excellent. For €20 you get the use of the jacuzzi, Turkish bath, sauna etc...

I would strongly recommend this hotel based on the quality of rooms, service and the very friendly welcome from attentive staff.

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of a BA package deal. We stayed in an executive room which gave us access to the executive lounge which is well worth paying that little bit extra for - the food, nibbles and drinks were excellent, The service was superb and the staff could not do enough to look after you.

The metro is 50m away and takes about 20 minutes to get to the centre; taxis are very reasonable. We ate in the bar and the restaurant and both were excellent and reasonable for hotel prices.

Some previous reviews said that the bedrooms were warm and we found this was the case but this did not ruin our trip although it would be useful to be able to adjust your room temperature.

We will be back at some point and will definitely stay here again. Thank you

Room Tip: Pay for an executive room

I was at this hotel some 4 years ago and there were many things to complain about.
Now even the WiFi is free and easy to use, breakfast is vast and delicious. You do not have to wait till the end of your breakfast until you get your coffee- really a big change.
The staff is helpful and very pleasant.
Roms are not that big, but comfortable and clean. Twin rooms offer small beds - maybe just fir kids.

Room Tip: ask for queen or king-size bed, at least

We stayed here for a week in February, it's a 30 minute walk into the city or about 20 minutes by metro which is 50m from the door, the views from the upper rooms are fabulous. I've rarely stayed anywhere where the staff seem so genuinely eager to please, pleasant but not imposing. It's definitely worth paying extra for the use of the Executive Lounge, the breakfast is a work of art and it was always relaxed, not the usual breakfast battle with hordes of other guests, it also includes canapes and beer/wine in the evening and during the day. The entire 2nd floor is a pool/gym/massage rooms/spa etc, not cheap but excellent.

My family and I stayed at the Corinthia Hotel, Lisbon for a week from February 18th-24th, 2013. Overall, we thought the hotel was excellent, and we definitely enjoyed our stay. There are a few issues that need tweaking, but I would definitely stay here again if given the chance.

1) Location- The hotel is located outside of the city center, in an urban residential area. If you are looking to be in "the middle of the action", this is not the place to stay. There are very few restaurant options within walking distance, and no supermarkets. At night, the area is pretty desolate. However, we were traveling with two children under 5 years of age, and when attempting to book hotels online, almost none would allow us to make a reservation with four people in the room. The few that would were either a) super expensive, b) not the highest quality, or 3) even further from the Centro. But the Corinthia accepted our reservation without a problem. There is a Metro stop (Jardin Zoologico on the Blue Line) approximately 3 minutes walk from the hotel, and it's only about 3 stops (5-7 minutes) to get to Praca dos Restauradores. You can buy a day pass for public transportation (trains, metro, buses and trams) for about $1.75. However, although most of the Lisbon Metro is extremely modern, with escalators and elevators, this particular stop is not fully accessible if you are traveling with strollers or a carriage. You will have to walk down a flight of stairs, and then up a separate flight, to get to the Metro entrance in the station, and then down another full flight to get to the platform. On the plus side, the hotel is only about 15 minutes from the airport, and taxis are cheap ($12 euros to the airport on weekdays, $20 on Sunday) and plentiful. And if you are traveling with children, you are only a 10-minute walk from the Zoo, which is astounding (we spent an entire day there). Rating- 3.5 out of 5

2) Facilities- The Corinthia looks every bit like a five-star hotel should look. Marble floors, a lobby with a large front desk, a separate guest services desk, numerous couches and chairs, multiple restaurants, a bar and lounge with live music on the weekends, spiral staircases, etc. Definitely exudes a high-end feel. The grounds were also well-kept, with a small but tranquil garden and waterfall in the rear of the hotel, as well as a tented patio with chairs and tables. Unfortunately, there is also a LARGE smoking area near the garden- the hotel should consider banning smoking entirely from its property, especially since they pride themselves as a child-friendly venue. Fortunately, the smokers were few during our stay. We did not rent a car, so I do not know about parking at the hotel.

Rooms were large and spacious; nicely furnished, with large desk, chairs with foot rest, dresser and closet, flat screen TV's with pay programming and a decent variety of free channels. Beds were very comfortable, with great pillows and linens, and the kids slept very well. Bathrooms are similarly large and well-appointed (bathtub, double sinks, bidet, hair dryer, good quality soaps and shampoos, large towels, robes and slippers, etc.). Room has a mini-fridge/mini-bar, which was just big enough to keep some milk and food for the kids inside as well. Views from the rooms, particularly on higher floors, are excellent, and windows are very large. There was free wi-fi, which worked fairly well. The hotel is also kept immaculately clean- even with many children in the hotel, there was no trace of dirt or disaster anywhere. One negative- in winter months, the AC is turned off, and only heat is available. During a mild winter such as this one (temperatures were 60-65 F during our stay), the room had a tendency to get very hot, even with the climate control off. Front desk did provide a fan that helped the situation (although it took two days to get it- see Service section below). You can open the windows just enough to let in outside air, but this will obviously increase the level of outside noise getting in. With the windows closed, you cannot hear ANYTHING, but when open, you do notice when the trains pass or airplanes fly overhead.

There is an executive lounge available, with free access should you book certain rooms- we did not have access, so I have no information. There is also a pool and full gym and spa. We did walk through the spa, and they seem to have a wide variety of services at a decent value. We used the pool almost every night- it is very large, with a shallow section cordoned off just for very young children. Lounge chairs abound, towels are replaced regularly, and the pool was kept sparkling clean at all times. Water temperature was regulated and "just right". One glitch- the area housing the indoor pool was supposed to be heated at all times, and on the first day, with was definitely toasty in there. However, there was a malfunction with the heating mechanism on day two, and the temperature quickly fell to borderline uncomfortable. The hotel was not able to get the problem fixed during the duration of our stay. Still, our children definitely loved being able to go swimming after dinner and before bedtime, so this is really a minor complaint in the grand scheme. Rating- 4.5 out of 5

3) Service- This is an area that the Corinthia definitely needs to improve if they want to "reach the top". On the positive side, nearly every hotel employee that we dealt with during our stay was friendly, approachable and polite. All spoke English fairly fluently, and communication was never an issue. Housekeeping did a great job, and the room service folks were super (and very nice to our children). Wait staff at the hotel restaurant were all courteous and professional.

However, there generally seemed to be a sense that when the hotel was busier, the "front of house" staff, most particularly the concierge/guest services, became overwhelmed very easily. And even when the hotel was quieter (which was generally true during our stay), the concierge/guest services appeared under-trained and/or a bit too casual in how they did their jobs. Examples- when we asked how to get to the Oceanarium, we were told to take the Metro to a particular stop, which was a "simple five minute walk" to the facility.

Well, five minutes turned out to be more like 30 minutes- you had to walk through a mall, down a long outdoor walkway to the river, then walk almost an additional mile to the actual aquarium, with no signs to guide you until you were nearly there. There was no one else near the desk when we asked for directions, so clearly the staff should not have been overwhelmed. Either the concierge on duty was lazy, and did not feel like taking the time to give us full directions... or he simply didn't know them, and didn't take the time to look them up. Neither is acceptable.

When we asked for a fan to circulate some air in our room, we were first told that the hotel did not supply fans. When we pointed out that the guest services book specifically said fans were available on request, the front desk denied it and simply suggested that we open a window. But strangely enough, the next day a guest services representative came to our room with the fan we requested. It was as if one hand didn't know what the other was doing. Guest services were also reluctant to recommend restaurants to us, other than to say there was a seafood restaurant across the street, and did not keep any menus for guests who might have wanted to order food to their room from outside the hotel.

Finally, when we noticed that the pool area had become cold, we went out to the spa manager and asked what was going on. This individual curtly responded that the heat was broken and that she had no idea what the problem was. She then ignored us when we attempted to get a timeline as to when it would be fixed. She was the only staff member at the hotel was was anything but cordial to us during our stay, but her negative attitude needs to be noted. Rating- 3 out of 5.

Food- A big positive for the Hotel. We had free breakfast during our stay, and it was universally excellent. The breakfast buffet, served at the casual restaurant in the hotel, had nearly unlimited options. Omelets made to order, fresh waffles, hot selections (eggs, potatoes, vegetables, meats, etc.) and cold (fresh fruit, cheeses, cereals, yogurt, breads, rolls and pastries, etc.), along with four different types of freshly squeezed juice, coffee, tea, etc. I have read some reviews saying that the breakfast was only adequate. This is, quite frankly, a ridiculous assertion. If you can't find something you like at the hotel's breakfast buffet, there is no hope for you.

Room service was likewise exceptional. Due to our children's age, going out for late-night dinners at a fado club was not an option for us. And again, restaurant options in the area of the hotel are very limited. However, room service food was very high quality. An above average variety, and at a reasonable price. And my notoriously finicky children cleaned their plates. And as I stated previously, the servers who took care of us were lovely, and very personable to the kids, who looked forward to seeing them bring the tray into the room.

There is another, more formal restaurant in the hotel, but we did not get to eat there during our stay, so I have no information.

Rating- 5 out of 5.

Value- We definitely feel that we got a GREAT value for our money by staying at the Corinthia Hotel. When we made our reservation there was a sale going on, and one of the options available to us was the "family room". This is actually two adjoining and interconnected rooms, one with a king bed, the other with two (or up to three) full beds. This came out to about 700 square feet of space, which even with our three suitcases, two strollers and four carry-on bags, was more than enough with room to spare. The price for the two-room combo, complete with free wi-fi and breakfast, was slightly more than $200 U.S./night. Even with the issues listed earlier, some of which are not within the hotel's control, this price was an incredible deal... bordering on a steal. Rating- 5 out of 5

Summary- Truly, although staying in the Centro might be "more desirable", in retrospect I don't think it is worth the premium you would pay to book a centrally located hotel, especially given how inexpensive and available public transport and taxis are in Lisbon. This is especially true if you are traveling with small children in tow. With such limited hospitality options for families of four or more, the Corinthia, with everything it provides, is like a virtual oasis in the desert. With just a few basic tweaks, it could be even better.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor (above 15), facing the Bridge

A two day business stay for an event we were hosting in the hotel. Very friendly staff with decent English skills and very accommodating to please their customers! I had an upgrade deluxe room with a spacious office corner and a very comfortable sitting area. I ordered in once and the food was delightful. A all problem with the television was fixed in minutes by a friendly maintenance guy who spoke excellent English. A little unfortunate was an incident with Iron for I had to call guest services twice and which subsequently left a very big stain on my dress shirt. Within a few minutes the manager came up, replaced the iron and had my shirt cleaned, no questions asked. Couldn't be more satisfied with the courtesy and felt delighted!
The hotel bar and two restaurants exuberated a nice atmosphere and although a slightly obnoxious bar tender felt the need to complain about the IT crowd's imability to comprehend anything but computers, the service was fine.

My wife and I stayed here in early Feb 2013 for a couple of nights; we booked an Executive Room, so had access the the Executive Sky Lounge.

The stay was excellent; the room was reasonably sized and very comfortable, whilst the Executive Sky Loung was well worth the extra; great views across Lisbon.

The service and the staff could not have been more helpful, and the spa was superb.

One final point, the guys making the cocktails REALLY knew their stuff!

All in all, a really relaxing place to use as a base to see Lisbon.

Room Tip: Spend the extra and get an Executrive room.
