“Just a really nice, friendly place to stay.”

As the owner of a service sector business I know the importance of customer service. This place has it in abundance! The staff are well trained, polite and totally professional. Our stay was enjoyable from start to finish and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast buffet is substantial and comprehensive and I couldn't think of anything else that could be added! The young man in reception who put our bags into storage when we arrived (we arrived 4 hours before check-in time) whose name was Patrick, was friendly, courteous and extremely obliging. Every member of staff we encountered after this was no different. Clearly this hotel considers staff training to be of the utmost importance and it shows. Thank you Palacio for a really relaxing and enjoyable stay, I would recommend this hotel anytime to anyone, it was a brilliant experience. Loved it!

Room Tip: Just ask, they are very obliging!

Stayed at hotel for four nights. Location is good but not actually central although it would only take a 30 minute walk to reach the center, this walk would take in the Edward VII Park giving great views of the city and coastline. There are two subway stations within a 5 minute walk. Tickets are bought from a machine the best option was a 5 euro ticket that gave unlimited travel on Bus, Tram and Funiculars. There is also a 50 cent charge for the card taking it to 5.50 euros. The card is then topped up every day for 5 euros. The card can also be used for the airport bus which stops a short distance from the hotel.
We took a taxi to & from the airport from the airport it cost 14 euros ( we arrived late on a Sunday evening) and the return journey was charged at just 8.
The only meals we took at the hotel was breakfast which could definitely be described as 5* a very big choice of both warm and cold food all of a very high quality.
The rooms were large and comfortable but did not really have the feel of a 5* hotel. The rooms did contain a very easy to use safe, a fridge and an old fashioned television. The room had both a shower and bath. There was a lack of information about Lisbon in both the room and reception.
Staff were very helpful and polite and gave good accurate local information

A jewel you shouldn't think at first glance.
A remodeled building offering a very comfortable stay in Lisbon.
Location is not strictly central, but at walking distance (5 min.) you get a subway station.
On the other hand the place is absolutely quiet and peaceful.
The staff is friendly and professional.
The Restaurant offers a good alternative for a romantic candlelight evening in the open courtyard. (seafood is remarkable)
A tiny SPA offers relax after a day around visiting the city.
But what is really GREAT is the fantastic breakfast : you can hardly see something so magnificent and abundant. You will certainly recall this experience.
Advisable , and above all, at a very good rate

Very nice hotel, helpful staff, generous room, great breakfast. A little way from the centre, but with good transport links all round. Close to Edward VII Park, which is lovely to walk though down to the centre, a little steep for me on the return journey, but loads of buses/metros.

The recycling in the early hours woke some of our party - not me - exhausted from all the walking, even though the beds are very hard - I asked for a couple of extra pillows to cushion my hip .

Room Tip: We had the ground floor, which was convelient.

on arrival to hotel met with very warm welcome by receptionist, given lots of information during our very efficient check-in, room was no 621 on top floor, nice bright large room with balcony with views over the city, comfortable bed and good sized bathroom. We found the location fine metro station not far from hotel, nice cafe just around the corner and large shopping centre just 5 minutes walk away. My only real fault with hotel was the hot food available at breakfast was not nearly hot enough and no tea or coffee making facilities in room. Would definately stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: top floor rooms excellent

I recently stayed for a couple of days at the Real Palácio hotel in Lisbon. Though I had an overall OK to pleasant stay I was yet a bit disappointed as I expected more from this – officially – five star hotel.

Let’s go into details:

Location:
The location is not perfect but certainly good: the hotel is located on a quiet side street with easy access to Av. Aguiar and to Av. de Meio avenues that eventually both lead to the large Marqués de Pombal square that marks the beginning of Avenida da Liberdade, the famous boulevard of Lisbon that again leads to the historic city center of Lisbon. By foot you walk about 30 to 40 minutes to the beautiful and very central historic Baixa Chiado area.

If walking isn’t your thing you also have the option of taking the subway. There are two subway / underground stations less than 5 walking minutes away from the hotel. The best option in most cases is São Sebastião underground station (next to the large, upscale Corte del Inglés shopping center) from where you can either take the blue line to the historic city centre or you take the red line to the Oriente station (designed by Santiago Calatrava) that is located next to the highly recommended Parque das Nações (the location of the 1998 World Exhibition). The other subway station, called Picoas, is located on the yellow line which mainly leads to the northern areas of Lisbon.

The hotel is located 15 minutes by taxi from the airport. The fare should be less than 10 Euros and I therefore strongly recommend taking a cab to and from the airport, especially if you carry heavy bags or suitcases. The friendly and professional front desk staff will be happy to call you a taxi if you need one.

There’s also an AeroBus (airport bus) station on Av. de Meio Avenue, 5 walking minutes from the hotel. The area around the hotel is pretty quiet at night with only a couple of smaller restaurants nearby which means you should be able to sleep even with open windows. Downside is that for dining and drinking you are probably better off going to the more central areas of Lisbon.

The room:
Though I have only booked a standard room I received a nice, spacious room on the 6th (and therefore topmost) floor of the hotel with a nice, relatively large balcony and a good view of the immediate surroundings of the hotel. The bathroom was nice with a bathtub, bidet, hairdryer and everything else one would expect there. I liked the bathroom because it was bright with natural light coming from the large windows. The bedroom was nice as well, the mattress firm but good. There was an old fashioned tube TV set with more than 30 programs, mostly in Portuguese. An in-room safe, a table and a chair was also there. However, neither iron nor ironing board was available in the room. What I also missed was some free drinking water (the water bottles from the mini bar cost I believe 3.50 €) or an in-room coffee maker or at least some instant coffee and tea bags. The air con worked well and was very quiet.

The hotel facilities:
The hotel consists of an old and a new wing. The old part of the hotel belongs to a restored former mansion that a wealthy local family occupied for several generations. This is the nice, charming part of the hotel. I especially liked the beautiful inner courtyard where you can sit and order a snack or a drink from the bar’s (worn out) menu. This reddish colored courtyard or patio is prominently displayed in most hotel booking websites as it is clearly the nicest part of the hotel. The lounge area next to the patio is also absolutely lovely.

The new part of the hotel is where the front desk, the à la carte restaurant and the majority of the guest rooms are located. The à la carte restaurant looked nice but I never ate there. The modern bar is OK but lacks in ambience and style. Sitting by the counter is somewhat uncomfortable due to its unfriendly design. On the flat screen TV they show documentaries and soaps. The prices for the drinks are on the high side, barely acceptable. The unobtrusive service people there are courteous and generally helpful.

The hotel doesn’t have any garden nor does it have a swimming pool. There’s just a Jacuzzi and a sauna in the basement (the hotel calls it the health club; I would rather call it the dungeon due to its dark and unfriendly ambience). The Jacuzzi is just large enough to accommodate 2 persons but even then it feels a bit too small. Travelers looking for a wellness vacation should probably book a different hotel. The gym there looked OK but I didn’t use it so cannot comment on the equipment.

The breakfast room is located in the basement and – like the health club – has no windows. The selection and quality of the food is good however. What I missed (remember: this is officially a five star hotel) was some kind of service: the breakfast was completely buffet style. No chef was there to prepare for example some eggs for you. No service person was there to refill your coffee etc. Even some three star tourist hotels offer a better service.

As it was low season the hotel managers obviously tried to fill the hotel by accommodating bus tour groups. There was a very large group of bus tourists there that in my mind destroyed even the little bit of atmosphere and charm the hotel had.

The business centre in the basement had two desktop computers of which only one seemed to work. Speed and quality of the Internet access was good. However there wasn’t anybody there to help you for example for making copies or sending a fax.

I paid around 90 USD per night including breakfast. For a real five star hotel this would be an excellent, even a fantastic deal. My personal opinion is that this is not a five star hotel but rather a – good – four star tourist hotel that pretends to be more than it can actually live up to. I personally didn’t really feel very comfortable in the hotel, though to be fair I cannot blame the hotel for anything specific. It’s just that the hotel concept didn’t work for me.

Next time I stay in Lisbon, I will probably look at options like the (more expensive but perfectly located) Altis Avenida hotel (across from Rossio), the (similarly priced) Sheraton (same area as the Palácio Real hotel) or the (I guess less expensive) Mundial hotel near the Restauradores area.

We got the hotel on a groupon deal - which made it good value. The breakfast was great, and communal areas lovely. Service was overall good, esepcailly in the restaurant. Only negatve was that the beds are very noisy, just to sit on nevermind move in your sleep. We asked about this, but werer told (very curtly) that they are all like that. It take some time to walk to anywhere worth seeing, although well situated for the metro.
