“Great experience”
Reviewed 28 August 2013

You cannot be there if you don't know the author. Why would you? Casa Pessoa is ahead of everything else a cultural centre that hosts education projects, small live concerts etc. Is meant, as I am sure Pessoa would have asked, to stimulate the brain and encourage youth to study.

I met one of the most well prepared guides of the world. He shared a lot about Pessoa's life and work and was very passionate about it. (The type with a spark in the eye) I learned, as I planned to, that Pessoa was a lonesome litterate who valued writing and reading above anything else in life, so much that he refused to marry his darling, Ofelia, claiming that would detour him from his destiny. I do not agree with his approach, even though I cannot help admiring such devotion. Also, being an active critic of Salazar, he was unable to get a steady well-paid job with the government. He had good revenues though as a freelance translator.

“Nice place, recommended only for who really want to know something more about the author”
Reviewed 10 May 2013 via mobile

It's a more intellectualized place, not a museum, that is ideal for those who want to know and find out more about the author's life. Not recommended for those who do not know the life and production of the author.

“Read some Pessoa before you go”
Reviewed 26 April 2013

If you have never read any of his work, a visit will not mean much. The Book of Disquiet was my preparation and it did not let me down! The use of 'heteronyms' was contextualised by the visit and the very friendly staff.

The interpretation panels are in English and Portuguese plus I had a long chat with a Portuguese fellow who told me about the relatively recent understanding of Pessoa in the context of the occult. His English was excellent.

The property is most attractively displayed and warrants a walk via the Estrela Gardens in order to appreciate the neighbourhood.

“If you like the writer, go.”
Reviewed 4 January 2013

You can combine a visit to Fernando Pessoa House, the tran 28 ride and a visit to Basilica da Estrela. The tran can take you to the Basilica. From there, is just 3 blocks to the writer´s house.
Admission in free. The house holds information, books, memorabilia and personal items from the Portuguese famous writer.
The best part for me is the library. You can spend hours there browsing books. Free wireless internet access is a plus. From there, my wife and i return to Baixa/Chiado by foot. Is a 3 km walk, with climbs but was well worth the trip.

“A must in Lisbon”
Reviewed 17 September 2012

As Fernando Pessoa was one of Portugals finest poets, and now recognized world-wide, a visit to the impressive and surprisingly huge collection of Pessoas personal belongings, paintings etc, and a huge library with very rare books and manuscripts, is simply a must for anyone with interest not only in literature, but also in Lisbon in the early part of 20th century.
