Even without reading the reviews prior to writing this, my first impression of GM hostel was that indeed, all hostels should be like this. The hostel's common areas and kitchen are very nicely decorated, and they play really rad music! The staff, Tatiana, Magda, Joana and João, (and anyone we have missed out!), are very friendly, hospitable and helpful with tips in making your stay an enjoyable one! There is a common room where you can relax and watch/rent DVDs. The kitchen prepares free breakfast every day which includes toast, waffles, jams and butter, some fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, milk, coffee and tea. There are three computers with Internet access for guests to use in the common room too. Wifi is very fast in the common area. You can play the guitar and keyboard there too :) They gave us free sangria (very delicious!) and traditional Portuguese soup too! The location of the hostel is at Restauradores, which is unbeatable!
We stayed in a 10-bed mixed dorm with a shared bathroom. Our room was facing the main street on Restauradores and had a balcony overlooking the lovely square. The noise from the street did not really affect my sleep quality, but maybe it was also because we got beds at the far end of the room away from the windows :) Speaking of this too as a result, our wifi was slow or nonexistent in our end of the room. Despite having to share a room with so many other guests, the room is very spacious, even with huge individual lockers, there are also tables in the room. Each bed has a charging socket and night light. The shared bathroom was very good and had warm showers :) Both the shower and toilet has three cubicles each and there was no genuine need to wait for one. Perhaps the only downside is that it can get very noisy at night (maybe because we were unfortunate to have inconsiderate roomies who did not care to lower their voice when people are sleeping...) but that's something we have to face staying at a hostel so bring earplugs and a sleeping mask and it should be ok :) We recommend this hostel to anyone visiting Lisbon!
