We fell upon this wonderful little restaurant purely by chance on our first evening in Lisbon. What a find. We had no idea about what was on offer as the waiter spoke virtually no English. The translation of the printed menu wasn't really very helpful. However this is the place to go for good home cooked food. The seating arrangements involves sitting at long tables with other people, but that isn't a problem. In fact it makes for a congenial atmosphere. By 7:45 there were several locals inside both eating and just drinking. The doors were then locked and it became clear they had closed for the evening. The bill was ridiculously cheap. We were delighted to find this place.

However on our last day we thought we'd go back and have lunch. We were presented with a very different scenario. It was full to capacity with locals having their lunch. We stood no chance of getting a table.
This little restaurant is easy to find behind the arch off one of the main squares.

A small typical portugese restaurant, long tables with other people sitting close next to you.
Paper napkins & table cloth but oohhh soo good.
The atmosphere is really typical portugese and the food aswell.
We ate fresh fish with 2 people, a bottle of wine, dessert and an entree for less then 25 euros.
Really worth a visit when going to Lisbon.

We just loved this place. A very modest place, nothing extra to lure you into the restaurant. I had Caldeirada de tamboril, a very good fish dish with good seasoning. My husband had steak with fried egg and chips and rice and he was very happy. Thank you for being kind and making good food.

"Why aren't you advertising on the internet?" I ask the handsome waiter.
He waves a hand in a sweeping gesture taking in most of the not very large restaurant.
"Why should we? We have no more space, and we don't want to become big and commercial. My mom and dad own the restaurant and take care of the food. I take care of the tables."
Indeed he is right. This place is full around lunchtime, and the pleasant, busy, and informal atmosphere is part of the charm that makes this a special place.
It's right in the tourist area, although a bit hidden behind an arch, but you won't find a waiter outside begging you to come in (that absence is a GOOD sign, trust me).
Inside, go with whatever today's special is, unless it sounds really repulsive. It is usually very good, and you will find that most of the guests (regulars most of them) pick the plate of the day. Sometimes you have two choices.
So what to expect? Atmosphere, genuine and honest cooking, nothing refined but good, plenty and very, very reasonably priced. This is not a place for long, romantic chats, but you will have plenty of time to enjoy your dinner and the view of other customers doing the same.
Basically you will find yourself doing for lunch what the locals would do. Highly and warmly recommended.

A hidden little gem. Just through the arch south of Dom Pedro IV Square.
Don't be put off by the fact that it's opposite a Peep Show place or that it's pretty basic inside - this is a great place for lunch or early dinner. It's far from fancy, being family run, Dad and son serving and Mum in the kitchen (which overlooks the bar/restaurant and you can wave to Mum).
Food is local, fresh and delicious.
Pretty much exclusively locals, which is always a good sign, but we were made to feel most welcome. All dishes were explained and when it was served up it came with the comment "if you don't like, we'll do something else for you". But, no worries, the food was excellent.
And all at fantastic price.
Good to people watch the locals popping in for chats and drinks.
If you want a nice little local experience with genuine friendly service, good food and real atmoshere this is a cracker.
