“Unique, powerful church”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

It's hard to put into words, but my visit to this church was very impactful. It was such a striking contrast with all the other churches I've visited in Europe. Somehow sitting in the middle of the visible fire damage and wear and tear from over the years was very peaceful. Definitely worth a visit. They also have Mass every hour on the hour from 8 or 9am to 1pm on Sunday.

“Hidden and Beautiful Church”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

It's a well hidden and old church in the center of Lisbon, one of the few places where you can light a candle (a real one). This church survived 2 earthquakes and one fire and still stands strong although you can still see somes signs. You must visit!

“A checkered history”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

Just behind Rossio Square, and a stone's throw from the site of the church of St. Francis (under which were the cells that held victims of the Inquisition), is the church of St. Domingo. It was here that the Inquisition victims were brought from the cells to hear the verdict of the accusations against them, and thus, their fate.
Having survived the earthquake of 1755, this church was badly damaged in a fire on 19th August 1957. The inside of the church, especially the columns, bear the ravages of this conflagration.
Nowadays, the church is used by many of the immigrants from the former colonies of Portugal.
it is worthy a short visit.

“Looks can be deceiving”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

This church burned down in the 60's, so there is nothing inside, but that provides an opportunity for beautiful concerts, especially around Christmas time.
Anyway I love the interior of the church, even as an open/clear space. It's really peaceful!

“Took my breath away.”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

This church is unlike any I have seen before. I have travelled quite a bit and have seen amazing churches, basilicas, cathedrals...etc but this church made me cry. The story behind it which I learned before I walked was touching. Please don't miss it.
