Was looking for somewhere to have lunch and decided to try the Solar do Kadete due to the number of locals eating there. Sat outside under the umbrellas. Our first waiter seemed to be having a bad day as he asked us three times what we wanted to drink. We got our drinks then we saw him again coming to us with two more drinks before he realised and turned around. He then had to ask for meal choice two times.
A few other people arrived after us and all got their meals before us along with bread whilst we were still waiting.. We were slightly giving up hope at this stage when one of the other waiters noticed us still waiting and went to see what was happening.
Shortly after we got our food. I had the steak and chips and my wife the sardines.
My steak was ok for the price, nothing special but tasty enough. My wife didn't like the sardines. Did get a bit smokey because they were cooking on a BBQ outside.
The bill was cheap enough but they had charged us for the bread we didn't get.

Just a block off of the river front by Corpo Santo Square is the charming little restaurant of Solar do Kadete. The specialty is seafood, and everything is fresh. The offering varies somewhat from day to day with the local catch, but all is absolutely terrific. They cook on a charcoal fired grill which provides a rich smoky flavor. We have eaten there several times during our current stay in Lisbon, including for our 28th wedding anniversary, and it has always been extremely good. The grilled octopus, grouper and sea bass are our favorites, along with the classic Portuguese tomato rice, but tonight we had the stone crab, which was very special also. Our lively waiter Henrique and his mother Maria, who does much of the cooking, complete the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing and authentic Portuguese dining experience. As for wine, just ask Henrique about one of their fine local Muscatels. We will definitely be coming back.

Location: Excellent location at Cais do Sodré.

Atmosphere: Less nice. Very noisy, no space and your clothes smell food afterwards.

Service: Very friendly and helpful but not all waiters speak a foreign language. It takes ages to get served and not all dishes are served at the same time.

Food: Very typical Portuguese Tasca food. Grilled beef with rice and French fries which are not well cooked and two leaves of bag salad . The quality of the meat and grilled (Bream) fish we had was really good, but the taste itself was unfortunately less convincing. We had to add quite some salt and pepper to get some taste out of it. The mixed grill plate was definitely not good, neither in taste nor in quality. The pork meat was a bit like rubber and the sausage consists only of grease.

Wines: The red house wine served was barely drinkable. We return it and ordered another bottle.

Price/quality: It is reasonable for the price you pay.

Pros: Location, friendliness, good quality of meat (beef) and fish, expect for the meat of the mixed grill plate.

Cons: Service coordination, too basic cooking skills and no quality consistency in the different served dishes.

Quick Tip: Don't get fooled with the entrances they bring you without having ordered them (cheese, ham, shrimps ...), you can refuse them and if you take them, I really recommend to confirm the price beforehand.

Conclusion: There are many other typical Portugese restaurants around with cooks having much better cooking skills ... or should I say having some cooking skills.

This gets 5 stars not because of fine dining: if you want a proper Portugese meal - a world away from airport fusion - then come here. Great, central location. Staff who were generous, patient, helpful, warm. A real sense of pride in the place. Grilled fish that is full of flavour and goes beyond the usual range of cod or bass. Mine came with gutsy, bitter greens and plain boiled potatoes. Dressed with a slice of lemon. That's it. Pudding a perfectly cooked pear in moscatel. A good, well-priced wine list. Enrique, the Lisbon King of Moscatel, made our visit particularly memorable.
He evening was a pleasure which will stay in the memory.

Been visiting Solar Do Kadete several times through the last three years. Never been disappointed. It is traditional portuguese food, but they really can cook. Try their grilled grouper with veggies. Yummie!
