“No view from 2nd floor”
Reviewed 29 August 2013 via mobile

Ok hotel in alfama, clean, beige room. We booked the room because of the recommended view from the balcony, however there was no view from the second floor... Breakfast was okay but they kept running out of the most popular pastries (white rolls and croissants).

This hotel goes above and beyond personal service. I find the front staff amazingly helpful and friendly. I am currently here and the view is spectacular. They were nice enough to give me a view room. The room has a king size, comfortable bed and nice bedding. The a/c works great. The room is big as well as the bathroom. I can see the towel issue being mentioned as the towels are a bit old but clean so it does not bother us. The area which has been mentioned both positively and negatively, I think is great as well. I love the cobblestone, narrow windy roads and the feeling of Lisbon. The breakfast looks great but we did not have it. I did have a cappuccino which was good.

I do not think I have ever given a hotel five stars but I am now because of the service plus the hotel. It is at the top of the hill but we love the walk. There are trams just down the road though. If u want a true feeling of Lisbon, book this hotel, you will not be disappointed!

The Olissipo Castelo looked very good on the website and I booked a four night stay in a suite with terrace as a honeymoon gift for my son and his wife. When they checked in on the first evening they found the room had furry white mould on one wall and the champagne I had ordered was cava in an ice bucket, by now full of warm water. They went out for dinner and on their return discovered the bathroom towels to be badly stained and found a used, bloody sticking plaster on the bedside table, leaving them in serious doubt as to room cleanliness. As it was by now late, they declined the offer of a room change and settled for clean towels.

They decided that a change of hotel was called for and a cancellation was agreed, although the room was charged at the full €195 rate. An email complaint to the Olissipo Group obtained an apology (with self-justification) and no other gesture.

The remainder of their stay was enjoyed at the Solar do Castelo, which was cheaper, better and in a more salubrious neighbourhood.

Decent place in convenient location. Clean and well maintained, helpful staff, good breakfast. But beware the "standard" rooms, which are far from 4-star quality despite the hotel's official rating. They're on the first floor with no views, not very comfortable bed (we had 2 twins pushed together), and nothing very special. Had we known, we would have sprung for one of the rooms with a terrace, or gone someplace else.

I just loved staying in this hotel. The staff were extremely competent, helpful and very friendly. Nothing was too much trouble for them. My room was delightful with fantastic views over the city. The vast bed was very comfortable, and I had a seating area with a sofa and two easy chairs. There was also a minibar, a safe and air conditioning. The bathroom had both a bath and a shower and was well stocked with body lotions, bath gels etc. A towelling robe was provided, as were slippers. The rooms were very clean and remained well-serviced throughout my visit.

Breakfast was excellent, with fresh fruit salads, yogurts, cereals, a small selection of cooked breakfast items - sausages, scrambled eggs, bacon - and a cold selection of meats and cheese. A large selection of breads, croissants, cakes etc was also provided with butter and various sorts of jam and honey, and a variety of fruit juices. The dining room is rather small with only (I think) seven tables, so on my final morning I noticed a few people having to wait for a table to become free before they could eat.

The hotel is situated on the top of a steep hill just underneath the castle of San Jorge (which is a gorgeous place to visit). Consequently you have a lot of steps to climb to get back to your hotel. But then Lisbon is a very hilly place so that's probably par for the course. You can always jump on a tram or get a taxi if you are feeling a bit tired.

I really can't fault this hotel. I just loved staying there and was sorry to leave. I'd recommend it to anyone and if I ever return to Lisbon, that is where I shall try to stay. As far as I'm aware there is no swimming pool.

Room Tip: If staying in a standard room, as opposed to a superior room, ask for a room on the fourth floor. T...

We stayed for 4 nights in June 2013. Very friendly & helpful staff. Good facilities. Although it isn't centrally located it's not a problem as the nearest tram stop is only 5 minutes walk away. The Largo das Portas do Sol viewpoint is close by and is a lovely spot to sit, enjoy the view, have a beer or a coffee and watch the world and the old trams go by

Room Tip: We stayed in a 3rd floor balcony room. Good views

We stayed here for two nights and loved being in the old part of the city. It's a little steep and there's a lot of graffiti but don't be put off. The hotel is beautiful inside and we had a terrace with a fantastic view overlooking the city. Our room was large and had lots of facilities including tea and coffee making in the room and a bath. The only problem is there are only 7 tables for breakfast so if you arrive at a peak time ( between 8.30am and 9.00am) you may have to wait for a table.

Room Tip: Ask for a terrace room
