“Good place.”
Reviewed 2 February 2010

Spent a couple of days in Lisbon last December staying at this hotel. The location is very good if you are a leisure traveller. As I was working, I found the traffic into the city business centre a challenge for my morning patience. The problem in not really the distance - in a sunny day you can walk for 15minutes and you're there. But as it was raining, went by taxi and believe me, its much longer than that.

My hotel room was very small (I took the cheapest one), but decor and staff is great! Good breakfast at the hotel restaurant.

I hate it when the reviews are misleading and I read the reviews on this hotel prior to staying there. Almost all the positive things said about the hotel are true - Great location and great staff / service, BUT this is simply NOT A 5 STAR HOTEL. I have to give it one star rating because if I book a 5 star place that is also a leading hotel in the world, I expect to stay in a 5 star place.

What was not 5 star ? The bed and furniture in the room are not 5 star - and that is somehwat the most important part of a hotel. Also the hallways / elevators are rather dark and need a serious update.

So if you go to this place, do not expect a 5 star place - but you will have the best location in the city and very good staff. Oh and the small bar on top of the hotel is worth going even if you do not stay in the hotel.

The Bairro Alto is located perfectly in the namely disctrict of Lisbon, right at the famous tram line 28. The Baixa could be reached on foot within 10-15', many restaurants, including the famous Tavares are just a frog's leap away.

The hotel itself has classily designed rooms (the mansards are somewhat dark and probably too cramped for two), but detail is next to perfect, from a fresh fruit platter in your room, the lights in the room and in the closets (!), the bathtub, etc.
There is a terrace bar with a gorgeous view of Lisbon.

The service was very attentive (borderline servile in my eyes) with a small make-up of the room before night.

The breakfast buffet was very good, excellent orange juice. However, the choice of food was somewhat restricted in my opinion.

All in all, an outstanding location for a visit to Lisbon. If you are lucky, you will find an internet special via agency (I paid €540 for three nights).

you may not be puzzled and impressed with the public areas (with the exception of the top roof terrace), and room size (this is a boutique) , but truly outstanding service ! this hotels cares about customers, and location is perfect for sightseeing and nightlife, many places are reachable by feet. Room isolation is also excellent. one of bests in lisboa. be ready to pay eur 20 per day for internet access.

I stayed one night at the hotel. The hotel itself is very beautiful, the top floor terrace overlooking the river is also beautiful but it is small and gets crowded at times. Also, my room was exactly facing a service door. After 6 am I could not sleep because the door made so much noise closing ( it is a thick fire door).
The real problem with the hotel is that it seems that in order to save money the space is divided with fake walls, the plywood kind. I found it very uncomfortable. You can knock at your room´s "wall" and you can hear and feel that the wall is hollow; gives you the feeling your are in a shack.
I also noticed that the toilet walls were very thin and i remember leaning against the bathtub wall and it shaking like it was going to go down.
To sum up: it is a shame the architect decided to use plywood instead of mortar and brick walls ( this alone is serious enough to take the hotel out of the 1st class range). The restaurant is excellent but its clientele has too many suits. I liked the bar on the ground floor, very good cocktails. Excellent service and very friendly police staff. Pretty too. I will go back, because it is so well located if your are into the Lisbon nightlife which I am, but I will see to it that I will not stay in the same room opposite the service door.
