“Restrained elegance in an old part of Lisboa”

We spent 2 nights here en route to Madeira. Reception was friendly and efficient, and took instantly volunteered to deal Ground Force in the matter of a missing case, which turned up early next morning. A razor, shaving cream, toothbrush and toothpaste were supplied gratis to tide us over until the case arrived. The hotel was very quiet while we stayed there. We had a room at the top of the building, with only a small dormer style window. However it was a very comfortable room with TV, DVD, safe, etc. The bathroom was very elegant and even had a sound relay and phone! On the roof there is a cafe with a wonderful view over the the city to the Tagus River. The Bairro Alto district is fascinating with steep hills, funicular railways, and the Santa Justa elevator is a must! There are The hotel's restaurant is small; the food there was very good, though at the inevitable 5 star prices. We found a wonderful meal about 2 miutes walk away at Taberna dos Arcos. The much written about Tram No.28 can be picked up more or less outside the hotel; its well worth a ride!

I stayed with my wife and three small kids in a suite which gave as all the space to enjoy the time in the hotel during our three day/ two night Lisbon city sightseeing trip.

The hotel is in the middle of the old town of Lisbon and you can get around easily by the tram 28 which takes you to the best places in Lisbon.

The location of the hotel allows you to enjoy Lisbon without the need for a car. You can get everywhere by tram or by foot.

Not a cheaply priced hotel but best in classe location, very nice rooms and staff.

We liked this hotel a lot. The location is perfect for both sighseeing during the day (metro and funicular close by) and the incredible night life in this area. The hotel staff were really excellent with their help in restaurant bookings and so on and the hotel even coped really well with a 5 hour power cut one evening. The rooftop bar is fantastic for a late afternoon or sunset drink and although it does get busy, you can still have a drink while you wait for a table. The rooms were really comfortable although even a Deluxe was a bit smaller than we would have expected, but the facilities are good and the room is serviced twice a day. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel equivalent to the Four Seasons or some other large chain then I can see why you may be disappointed but if you are looking for a 5 star boutique hotel, then you would be coming to the right place. We would choose this hotel again when we come back to Lisbon.

The hotel is perfectly located into the Bairro Alto. The staff is professional, helpful and not too posh for this class of hotel. It pretends to be hype, luxurious but not classic and so are the rooms. Not a cheap hotel, but a nice place to be for enjoying the nightlife of Lisbon.

I wonder whether the hotel star rating system is backed up or imposed & controlled by the Portuguese government? If you compare this so-called 5* hotel with other ones in Lisbon (Sofitel, Tivoli,...), and especially to 5* hotels in the North-European & Anglosaxon world (Hilton, Kempinski,...), then there is definitely something wrong here. Bairro Alto is almost claustrophobically tiny: an income "hall" twice the size of a bedroom, a reception desk with at the most room for 2 persons, a restaurant (also for breakfast) where at the most some 25 to 30 people can be seated,...

Don't expect any breathing or conversation space during breakfast: you almost eat in the plate of your neighbour. The first evening we were the only ones risking to have dinner in the restaurant (good starters, but huge, tastless main plates), the other nights we had dinner in the neighbourhood (Tavares is a must-try restaurant, with a well deserved Michelin star), and never noticed any eaters in the restaurant...

The two tiny (4-person) elevators are - as you can expect - often busy. The rooms are small (we've seen larger rooms in the majority of 3* & 4* hotels). The groundfloor bar is dark (no window on the outside) and to be avoided by non-smokers.

The only assets are:

- its location (walking distance to almost everything in the Bairro Alto district & the centre of Lisbon - for Belem you'd better take tram 15)
- its roof terrace with a wonderful view on the river and the bridge (but - again - way too small: 10 to 15 people at the most, and often very windy)

So to summarize: this is more of a 3* hotel...

Booked through Cognoscenti Boutique Hotels
Bairro Alto is a great, lively place - and the hotel itself well located.
Small feel - best bit was the wonderful roof terrace - v popular with locals, and so popular that people queue up (well, there's a sill to perch on) whilst waiting for a table. Went in October and it was boiling (surprisingly).
Bedrooms small (or at least the two I booked were).
Again, the recommendation comes with the above provisos.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel over Christmas and New Year's holiday. It's in the heart of Bairro Alto - close to bars/shops/restaurants. We had a Prestige room and it was amazing.
