“Respite for tired travelers”
Reviewed 30 April 2013

We stayed here on an overnight layover in Lisbon. The hotel was convenient to the subway; easy to get to from the airport. Room was comfortable, large, quiet, clean. Desk staff were helpful. They have a small bar in the lobby, restaurant inside (we didn't eat there) and more dinning options nearby. We had to get up too early for breakfast. Desk staff arranged a cab to the airport for us (before the subway was running.) This went smoothly.

This is a clean, very reasonably priced hotel in the Saldanha neighborhood of Lisbon, a couple of Metro stops from the historic downtown. There was nothing particularly special about the mid-size room or common areas, but they suited us fine for five nights in April. Contrary to other reviews we've read, we had no problems with noise from other rooms or the street, although we could easily hear any voices in the corridor. The WiFi was spotty to nonexistent most of the time, but we often used the computer in a nook near the bar to check our e-mail and surf the web. Breakfast, if not included, is 10 Euros (a bit steep), but it offers a lot more than the typical Portuguese breakfast, which is usually coffee and toast or a pastry.

Although not a tourist hot spot, the area surrounding the hotel was a lively urban neighborhood with a fair amount to interest first-time travelers. The monument in Saldanha Square is impressive and there are lots of old buildings, dragons' teeth sidewalks and tiled facades to look at. There are some decent dining options. Two nights we walked to restaurants - one very good nouveau (Sessenta) and one more traditional but a bit too touristy (O Campos). Our favorite local eatery was Pastelaria Castelo Branco (right across the street), where we ate breakfast and lunch several times and had many conversations with staff and patrons in mixed Portuguese/English. We didn't have time for the Gulbenkian Museum, which is world class and also walking distance.

Note that even though the Zenit is quite close to the Metro, we found it very difficult to find the hotel after getting to street level: our map lacked some street names and many streets lacked adequate signage, and no one of the many passers-by stopped to help two travelers staring befuddled at a map.

The biggest negative was the front desk staff, who were businesslike at best, but also by turns, cold, rude, snobby, impatient or fake polite with an undertone of 'Why are you bothering me?' Their directions were often useless and we became lost numerous times. When we asked about one local restaurant (Sessenta, above), the front desk (apparently hoping we'd choose the in-house restaurant instead) told us it had closed down. They also had an odd rule that we couldn't put our restaurant leftovers in the mini-bar fridge and that we would be charged for every item we removed to make room for them. (They offered us the use of the kitchen fridge instead, eight floors down.)

Overall, a good value in a good location that will meet the needs of travelers who don't want coddling.

I stayed at the Zenit for three nights in March. I chose this hotel based on previous positive experiences and a good rate of EUR 50.- /night (tax included).

The Zenit, while not in the very center of historic Lisbon, is well connected and well situated near Saldanha in a nice area. You can walk to Rossio in approx. 30 minutes. It’s a nice walk along Av. Fontes Pereira De Melo, Marques Pombal and Av. Liberdade. At Saldanha you have access to two Metro lines (Red line to the Airport and to Parque do Nacoes and Yellow Line to Marques de Pombal and Rato for Jardim Estrella). There are also couple of helpful bus lines at Saldanha; e.g. 736 for Marques de Pombal, Rossio, Baixa and Cais do Sodre, 738 for Estrella and 727 for Belem. At Saldanha you will also find a Shopping Center and a Continente Supermarket two or three blocks away.

As for the hotel itself, check in and check out were friendly and fast. The room was on the smaller side but nicely decorated in a modern style and felt comfortable. In my case the room was on the top floor of the building with windows that could be opened, which I always consider a big plus. The room as well as the spacious bathroom were spotlessly clean. I found the bed to be very comfortable. The Shower was good. The water pressure was rather weak, but the water temperature was constant, so it was really ok. WLAN was included in the rate and was working well. A really pleasant stay.

I did not have breakfast at the hotel this time, but I remember it from previous stays as being varied and of good quality. As it was not included in the rate, I rather opted for the various little cafes and pastelarias that can be found all over town for a quick breakfast snack.

So the Zenit again provided for a very nice stay. As its rates are regularly among the best for 4* hotels in Lisbon, I believe this really a great choice and I am looking forward to returning to the Zenit on future trips to this great city.

a great good value place to stay. spotlessly clean. comfy bed (although there was an odd sheet/duvet set up). Good sized room. Very spacious and clean bathroom with top up of bath-goodies everyday. TV/internet etc all working well. Helpful staff. Great location 5 min walk to bus stop (376 goes straight into town 10 min trip) and 5 min from two tube stations (with direct link to airport). Definitely a good find and would recommend to others. Did not take breakfast option.

The service and environment that you would expect from a major chain hotel with the cosiness of a boutique hotel at un unbeatable price ... a winning combination !
Nice and large breakfast buffet, free and fast internet and convenient business location.

I've travelled to all inhabitable continents (that's right) on business, and this is one of the worst ones I've stayed at - on par with small-town motels.

First, the key-based switch was broke, and nobody bothered to fix it. I've repeated my request three times, and they didn't care (of course, they do note it, with a smile). So, I'm in the room with unpredictable electricity; and they won't switch rooms. Instead, they give ridiculous ideas on how to put in more key-cards to make it work.

Second, they advertise free-internet. It's all great, when there is reception. I'm in the 8th floor, but, I have 1-2 bars of wi-fi (for about 30% of time, and at other times no-connection).

Third, they have hard floor, with smooth laminate. So, the bed keeps slipping off the wall, each time I try to lean my back. And, they have two beds, right next to each other, but not attached. So, a guest rolling over will fall in the gap if they tried to - waiting for that to happen.

Fourth, the walls are extremely thin, and the hallways also have laminate flooring. And, of course, the guests here love to walk around in hard-soled shoes, sounding like hooves of horses on a cobblestone street.

So, one can go figure how much sleep one gets here.

There are some better hotels around here, for a slightly higher price that I've stayed at before. I won't name them, since I'm not here to advertise, just warn other visitors.

Room Tip: Higher floors seem to have bad internet. Elevators are slow - so plan on that. If staying single, as...

Tip: the park is small even for a Peugeot 206 (15Euros/day). And it's hard to get a spot in the street (and it's also one of the priciest areas to park in Lisbon, 3h30 = almost 5Euros). Zenit is located between 2 metro stations (Picoas/ Saldanha), you should take advantage of it.

Pros: great location, great value for money (50 Euros/night), comfy - sleep quality (selection of different types of pillows), spacious, beautiful decor, housemaids are really nice and efficient (extremely clean room). Check my pics.

Cons: the front desk staff could be more welcoming and efficient (fast).

I was born and lived in Lisbon for many years and I can assure that Zenit is a great option (value+location). You can take the metro, bus or walk around.
I highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: 207 is a nice room but maybe a room in a higher floor would have a nicer view and less noise
