“Stunning boutique hotel caked in charm”
Reviewed 25 July 2011

Visiting on a birthday treat, we were overwhelmed with the friendliness and subtle class of this small but well endowed hotel. All the benefits of a larger competitor but on a much smaller scale - we were moved rooms from 5th to 2nd floor when we asked for a balcony at no extra cost.

Thanks!!

Room Tip: avoid 5f is poss - lovely rooms but smaller windows to open so cannot really get a feel for the city...

Spent the last week at this fabulous hotel. Location, location, location plus our lovely room had three balconies, high ceilings, a comfy bed, great pillows, a fantastic bathroom, ample closet space...
Daily breakfast was a nice touch. Friendly informative staff.
We wholeheartedly recommend the Heritage Av Liberdade and will return in the future.

Room Tip: Read about the how fabulous the top floor rooms are but our room on the first floor was just perfect...

We stayed here four nights at the beginning of July. The hotel and it's staff were welcoming. The large lobby has a tea bar where you could make a pot of tea choosing any of at least 20 different kinds of loose tea - a very nice touch! Plenty of overstuffed furniture for seating. Breakfast was served in the lobby and was the usual spread. Worth it if it's included in your rate, but a bit overpriced to purchase. Very nice that it is served until noon!

Our room was on the second floor next to the library. Convenient to get downstairs - we used the spiral staircase instead of the elevator. Our room had two windows overlooking the side street by the hotel. These had wooden shutters and heavy drapes so light and noise were kept at bay. We enjoyed having separate reading lights anchored to the walls. These were on flex arms that allowed us to direct the light.

The hotel is convenient to public transportation. Rossio metro stop and Rossio train station are only a couple of blocks away. There are many restaurants within walking distance.

We chose the Heritage Av Liberdade for our trip to Lisbon, even though it was a slightly higher class and price than most of the hotels we usually stay in during our international traveling, because neither my husband nor I had been to Lisbon before and weren't familiar with the city. The location was pretty great--we were able to take the Aerobus to and from the Lisbon airport, which dropped us off at a stop about 3 minutes walk from the hotel, and it is only 5 minutes from Rossio, a central square in the old city. We were close to various kinds of transportation--metro, bus, tram, funiculars--of which there are many in Lisbon, as it is a more spread-out city than the places in Spain we'd visited earlier in our trip. The hotel itself is very nice: our room was quite large, with windows overlooking the Avenida Liberdade (but we weren't bothered by traffic), and our bathroom had both a shower and bathtub with robes, slippers, and washcloths! (This was the only place in Spain and Portugal where we got washcloths, oddly.) They had a tea station set up in the lobby where you could make complimentary tea to bring to your room in the evening. We saw many people having breakfast at the hotel, but we took advantage of the many cafes around Rossio and just had breakfast there instead. The only downside we noticed was that the ceiling must have been very thin, because occasionally we could hear a fair amount of noise from what I assume was the room above us--but this only happened briefly each night and didn't really disturb our stay.

Delightful, small boutique style hotel. Fantastic location, beautiful rooms - though aim for the fourth floor or above.

Stayed for three nights in this exquisite boutique hotel in the wonderful old heart of Lisbon and found it hard to fault: Location, Room, Service, Food and Ambience were all exemplary and contributed greatly to a near perfect introduction to Lisbon.

My husband and I stayed at the Heritage for four nights at the beginning of July and then returned for another two nights toward the end of our extended trip throughout Portugal.

Overall, the hotel truly met our needs. The location was great (near two metro stops), the aeroport bus, the tram and other buses as well. It's on a major boulevard, but it is not noisy and it's an easy point to start any of your sightseeing journeys.

The staff was extremely nice. When we arrived early they put us in a different room so that we could start our day. They were always friendly and eager to help. In fact on our last night there there was an issue with our in room safe which had our passports. The concierge quickly came up and was able to resolve what could have been a very stressful situation (and it was 1am) The one draw back was even though they were extremely nice they were not that well informed in terms of concierge type information. We asked about going to this festival out of town and they gave us wrong train times, and ticket prices. We asked about certain markets and other tourist type sightseeing things and they usually did not know the answer or if there was more than one person at the desk, they gave us conflicting answers. We are pretty much fine on our own so we were able to figure things out, but if you really need concierge assistance they will not be able to provide it.

The breakfast was fine and provided anything you would need for breakfast given all the pastry shops and food places you will find in Lisbon for eating throughout the day. There is fruit, assortment of breads, jam, cereal, OJ, water, coffee etc. I believe there was even eggs and bacon. We don't eat a lot in the morning so it was perfect for us. Also it goes until 12 which was really nice if you had a late start.

The room we had on our first stay was much better than the second. It was on the 5th floor, spacious, strong air conditioning and had what we needed. When we returned the hotel generously offered us an upgrade to their largest room, but the room stank of smoke. Since I am pregnant my husband asked to switched rooms. They said it was a non-smoking hotel, but the room was still filled with the smoke smell. They then switched us to the smallest room on the 1st floor. It was fine for two nights, but it was tight. It is a little annoying that the price of the two rooms we stayed in was the same given the vast difference in the rooms.

The last drawback was the wifi and the internet overall. I'm not sure what the other reviewer was talking about b/c the internet consistently disconnected on the computers in the library and the same happened with the wifi. Obviously you are not on vacation to spend your time on the computer, but checking email for work, or doing a little neighborhood research became a drawn out task b/c the internet took so long with connecting/disconnecting, etc.

Overall I would recommend the hotels. The annoyances were little and did not truly impact a great vacation.
