I will always look back on a certain afternoon in Lisbon when I stopped at the Restaurante Telavive with great fondness. It was a classic case of finding an excellent place to refresh a weary traveler completely by chance. I was simply very tired after spending hours of shopping for friends and found myself on the Rua do Crucifixo on the which the wonderful chocolate shop Xocoa is located. I was very hungry and tired and simply stopped in the first place I saw that advertised traditional Portuguese food (which of course I wanted to sample, since I was in Lisbon). The Telavive was handy and I was very grateful I made the decision to stop in. It has the wonderful atmosphere of a family-owned restaurant in which the staff takes great pride in what it offers its customers. I think the best thing I had was a vegetable soup made with kale that I have had in the United States, but was out of this world in this restaurant. I also had a traditional cod dish, "bacalhau a bras," but couldn't finish it, not because it wasn't delicious, but because the selection of bread and olives as part of the couvert was so wonderful that I spoiled my appetite eating every speck that was put in front of me. Part of the reason the experience was so refreshing was that the individual who waited on me was very attractive and charming, indeed absolutely adorable. It's always a pleasure to deal with superior wait staff, and I left feeling wonderful after experiencing thorough exhaustion just before I came in. I will certainly stop there if I'm ever in Lisbon again. The eating area is small, which of course adds to the ambience. The prices are quite reasonable indeed for the quality of the food served.
