This is a difficult review to write because first and foremost, the staff at Valverde are some of the kindest, helpful group of young people you will ever have the pleasure to meet, and/or be served by. From Reception to dining, they are warm and friendly. But, if you have read my prior reviews, I attempt to give an unbiased look at the property as a whole, to help other travelers. So... here goes. My wife and I travelled to Lisbon, Portugal, not really knowing anything about the city or area. We were just told that Portugal was now the "It" place to go... so we shelved our almost planned trip to Lake Como, and took the plunge. Here is the problem with Valverde; It is not a 5 star property as advertised, or at least, it would not be, if you have stayed at other true five star facilities. When you arrive at this boutique hotel, there is no doorman to greet you. While reception is about 10 steps upward, there is no bellman to assist you in getting your bags to Reception, probably because they don't know you have arrived. Reception has a make-shift, portable desk, with the kindest front desk staff imaginable, dressed not in hotel attire, but casual street clothes. There is no spa, no gym, no concierge. There is a pool of sorts, in the courtyard where you eat, though its placement is odd, since others are having meals around you. Our room was the Valverde Suite, large, clean, if not a little worn, with a spacious, thoughtful, and modern bathroom. No luxury amenities one has come to expect from a true five star facility elsewhere in Europe... no USB ports, no great lighting, etc. My wife and I kept making excuses for the Hotel's shortcomings, because that's how kind the staff was. We felt guilty. But even saying that, the staff lacked polish and structure, as you generally see in five star properties. Maybe this is just how Lisbon is.in general Maybe that's how the vibe is supposed to be in this city, and thus in this hotel. But call it what it is; a bed and breakfast, almost folksy in feel. A place were there is a lovely courtyard to enjoy a delicious breakfast amongst, what feels like friends, in a casual environment. If this is what you are looking for, stay here... If not, the Four Seasons is just up the street.

Room Tip: Valverde Suite's are nice, as they have a sitting area

A lovely hotel, good location, very friendly welcome from everyone, from front desk to house keeping. Great breakfast and lovely pool to sit quietly next to away from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon. Luxury without the oppressive formality so often evident in nice hotels.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Valverde for 3 nights in mid-July and LOVED every minute of our stay.

Upon check-in, we knew that we had found a wonderful gem. The entire staff was outstanding, kind and helpful. The little hotel is very pretty with a courtyard for brunch, cocktails, swimming and some entertainment (Fado was delightful). Our room, 502, facing Avenida da Liberdade was wonderful, quiet and elegant. The location is perfect.

The iPhone provided to each guest while in Lisbon was a great touch and very helpful. The bed was great and the bathroom so nice as well.

There could be better light in the bathroom, as it felt a wee bit dark. Only other constructive criticism was the AC, which definitely could have been stronger.

The breakfast was delicious and again, each and every staff member were wonderful and one could not ask for anything better. When we are back in Lisbon, we will definitely be back!!

Room Tip: We loved our room on the 5th floor as it had lovely french windows and a view out to the street and small juliette balconies

Stayed in Junior suite and Valverde Suite with family of 6. Smaller boutique hotel but rooms were very nice. Valverde suite is a bit dark. The location was great. Easy access to all the restaurants and sights. The 5 stars are definitely for the service. Everyone from housekeeping, to hosts and attendants at the restaurant and front staff were amazing. Always willing to help at any point. Great attitude and so personable. Mauro, Ruben and Marta were exceptional help for our stay. Valverde Hotel should be so proud to have such a great and impeccable staff to make it a great 5 star hotel.

Room Tip: Junior suites have more light and spacious
