The Museu do Aljube does an excellent job telling the story of political and social turmoil in Portugal during the Salazar years. The mix of displays -- wall panels with quotes from victims, vintage photos, maps and texts, video testimonials, evocative artworks -- does a very effective job conveying the complex dynamics and dangers facing many citizens during those troubled times. Staff at the front desk also were very helpful in explaining the context of particular events.
We highly recommend setting aside several hours to tour and reflect on this very moving museum.
