Well worth a visit if you are in Obidos - it is small, and is well worth a short visit to admire / appreciate / respect the tranquility and the stunning, tiled interior

As one walks up towards the tower of Obidos, this small church comes to you in a benign way. Yet its front courtyard feels Roman (those nice old clay plant/flower pots seemed to pull you back to present) and inside it commands attention. It's altar's exquisite - I'm pretty sure it's done by a well known artisan. I marveled at that piece of Pieta in whitestone/marble? for a while. Those blue tile walls provide a sharp contrast to the artistic feel of this church - one has to contain himself/herself though when inside since this is place of worship and avoid disturbing the pilgrims (like me). Wear a suitable footwear when you walk the ancient streets of Obidos - steep/slooping/slippery on a wet day.

The Church of Santa Maria is located at the Praça de Santa Maria. During the time of the Visigoths, it could have been a place of worship. When the Moors came, they built a mosque here. King Afonso Henriques captured the town in 1148 and a Christian church was built on top of the mosque. The present church was reconstructed in the 16th century. It has a white bell tower and a Renaissance portal. The portico has columns from the Renaissance. The church has three naves and the ceiling has beautiful paintings. There are many hand painted tiles from the 17th century. There is a tomb of Joao de Noronha, a commander of the city in the 16th century, and the tomb is considered a Renaissance masterpiece because of its sculpture, created by Joao de Ruao. There are paintings by Josefa de Obidos from the 17th century. The Church of Santa Maria in Obidos was the setting for the wedding of King Afonso V to his cousin, Princess Isabella of Coimbra, on August 15, 1441, when they were both still children aged 9 and 10, respectively.
