“Fine breakfast”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2012

A spacious, but not special room. A good bed. The curtains were not washed for many years.
The breakfast buffet was fine, generous selection.
Outside the pousada it is very dark at night. There are chains which can not be seen in the dark. So I stumbled over a chain resulting in a number of abrasions
So the management would either have to remove the chains or - maybe better - might
provide good lighting outside the front door.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for choosing to stay at Pousada D.Maria I and for taking the time to post your opinion , as it helps us to get better.

We take all feedback very seriously and sincerely regret we did not meet your expectations, particulary concerning the surroundings and the restaurant.
Queluz is quite ok at normal conditions as Sintra and Lisbon are very easy to reach by train, but of course on strike it turns out very complicated as you have to travel by car and trafic and parking can be really dificult.
We truly hope you can choose again Pousadas Portugal , giving us an oportunity to improve our service.

Sincerely Yours

This was the first stop on our 15 day trip staying exclusively at Pousadas. Comforable rooms; good breakfast; friendly staff; good but not excellent dinner experience at main restaurant. Stayed at this Pousada 3 nights visiting Sintra, Cascais, and Lisbon. Not much to see/do around Queluz other than the palace (a must see) across the street and not many restaurants nearby (at least ones that were open when we were there). We arrived on a Sunday so it was complicated planning what to do/see each day since various attractions tend to be closed Sundays or Mondays or Tuesdays and getting around was also a big consideration. It was difficult to actually get to downtown Lisbon - trains were on strike causing parking lots at metro stations to be full and traffic to be heavy everywhere. Ended up driving most of the way downtown and parking in an expensive underground lot next to a Metro station. Metro day pass (good for 24 hours) is a good deal to get around once you are downtown and is good on streecars to the castle/Alfama or Belem (but keep a eye on your valuables since the streetcars are jammed and pickpockets are a problem). We'd like to spend a lot more time in Lisbon so if we come again we'd stay either downtown or close to a Metro station.

Room Tip: We had a room facing the Palace which was nice to look out on each morning.

We take all feedback very seriously and sincerely regret we did not meet all your expectations.
In fact stay at Queluz when threre is a strike is not easy as you need a car and there is trafic and not parking facilities as usual.Otherwise it would be very comfortable to travel to Lisbon or Sintra by train.
We truly hope you can choose again Pousadas Portugal , giving us an oportunity to improve our service.

I thought this pousada would be a good jumping off point to see Sintra's sights and those of the coast around Cascais, and it was only that. Unfortunately, for us, our two nights at the pousada coincided with the Renaissance Festival which took place outside our window. Contrary to the promise made by the staff at check-in, the festival noise did not end at midnight. After a couple of run-ins with the Portuguese military -- who appeared to be in charge of parking around the pousada -- we created our own parking spot within the space allocated for hotel guests that the staff directed us to... we moved the fence to accommodate our rental car. The hotel was pleasant enough, but not great. It is located very close to the road and is surrounded by a gravel parking lot on three sides. Not the prettiest. The property and rooms are showing signs of wear. The staff attitude doesn't compensate for these deficiencies, especially during breakfast. The hotel's restaurant across the street beside the palace, highly rated in Frommers, was a huge disappointment, so we sought out other options in the village. In retrospect, there's little that would bring me back to this pousada.

Room Tip: Can't help you here.

Nice building and nice room but it is in the middle of a large cobbled car park with no grounds at all - as it rained it wasn't so bad but in good weather nowhere to sit out. The only on site meal is breakfast which is ok. The main restaurant is in the palace over the road - a short walk almost entirely on cobbles which makes it feel an awful lot further - not so good in the rain or for women with anything other than flat shoes. A restaurant on the edge of the car park has decent food at good prices but runs out a lot towards the end of the week. The actual area is grotty. While we were there one member of staff had to cover both reception and the bar and on one occasion had to clean our room as the cleaning staff forgot to. I understand it is no longer on the Jules Verne list - shame we went this year and not next !

We take all feedback very seriously and sincerely regret we did not meet your expectations , particulary concerning the service; we trully apologize for any troubles it might caused to you,in particulary when you had to wait for your room to be cleaned .Those days we had some issues with the staff, one missing for illness . We agree with you, the enviroment is not so nice and comfortable specially when walking , but as you might understand this is an historical area and is not possible to change it.

You need a car to get to the Queluz Pousada, located between Lisbon airport and Sintra, but it is based in a stunning building and a good choice if you want to explore both Lisbon (accessible by car or by suburban train - station is an easy 15 minutes' walk away) and other places (eg Sintra is less than half an hour away).
The hotel lives up to Pousada standards. Breakfast was not brilliant, with tables too close to each other and slow service, with items always missing from the buffet, but this is a minor complaint. To find dinner you either have to cross the road (one of the pousadas' better and more expensive restaurants, set in the old kitchens of the Royal Palace), or venture out. There are a couple of cheap-and-cheerful places within 5 minutes' walk, or if you are braver try the excellent "O Parrairinha" in Tercena, an easy 10 minute drive away.
The Pousada is brilliantly situated for the Royal Palace itself (across the road - not to be missed), and the guard at the barracks is changed at 0900 daily just behind the hotel.
If you are arriving late at the airport, the Pousada is an easy 20 minute drive without getting snarled up in Lisbon itself.
Book the hotel via the Pousadas website which often has excellent deals.

Room Tip: Go for one of the executive rooms for a bit more space.

Very helpful staff and nice rooms. Slightly faded baroque palace, restaurant which is over the road is superb.
The palace which was probably built outside Lisbon when it was green and leafy is now in a grotty suburb but there are good links by train into Lisbon about 20 mins walk to the station

Room Tip: If you're over 55 there is a 30% dicount

We traveled through Portugal for 10 days and stayed at 3 pousadas. This pousada is in the old guard house of the palace, built in the 16th century (I think) and right across from the palace, which is a spectacular site. The outer building is impressive, and while the rooms are basic, they're clean and comfortable. Breakfast is in a lovely dining room, with a generous selection of fruit, pastries, cheese, meat, eggs, yogurt, and juices. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the train station to Lisbon and trains run frequently, which is convenient. We tried the 2 restaurants on either side of the pousada, which had good food at reasonable prices. But the best thing about this pousada is the kind and helpful staff, especially Paolo, whom we befriended, and Rute, who helped us with our car rental. Overall, we'd recommend this place highly.
