“Chintzy”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2011

This hotel is very clean but also very chintzy! There is no parking and you need to pay on the street or park in some lots a couple of blocks away where there is no security. They have slow and medium wi-fi, which they charge you for. The medium is about $13.00 USD per day. Quite expensive! You get one tiny bar of soap for two people to use and the pillows are something out of the stone age!

We needed to stay over in Setubal for one night before proceeding down to the Algarve.
Based on TA reviews, we chose this hotel. We arrived two hours before check in time and were told we would have to wait until 2:00, the official check in time. The receptionist was professional, but not very friendly. I waited by myself at the hotel until the room was ready. My husband needed to attend to business in the city. During the time I waited, I did not notice a flurry of activity or any check-outs by other guests, which would necessitate my waiting for the room to become ready. Perhaps, housekeeping was just behind schedule. In any event, they did make the room available about a half hour before the official check-in time. As an aside, if someone had offered an early check-in for an additonal fee, we could have and most definitely would have opted for it. This way, we just felt we were being made to wait because of hotel rules.

Other than a few long black hairs on the counters (which could not have been from either of us), the room was clean. The view was nice -- we could see the water and we could open the window for fresh air. The room was decorated in a rather sparse way. It reminded me of a ski hotel in the alps, but it worked. There is a fridge in the room, although we did not use it. The bathroom was pleasantly modern and was equipped with all the usual lotions and soaps. The location is the the best one for a hotel in Setubal that I noticed. It is literally within walking distance to the ferry and near to many local restaurants. I already knew the city of Setubal is not terribly exciting, but that is no fault of the hotel. The breakfast was adequate, but I have had better in other European cities. It does the job of getting one ready for the day. If we need to be in Setubal again, we will probably consider this hotel again -- not because it is fabulous, but because it will meet our basic needs.

Room Tip: The higher floors will be quieter. The view to the water is nice,

The things that I liked.. the hotel is well located and extremely visible to English speaking folks (maybe too much so as a noisy McDonalds is on the ground floor as well). The breakfast on the 5th floor was decent and had an amazing view, the bathroom was pretty good. What I didn't like was that for the city of Setubal, this hotel felt overpriced by about €20/per night. The room itself felt old, well used, small bed, no special amenities. The old town of Setubal is about 50% closed down storefronts, dirty, lacking sights to see. We discovered the hard way that there is no dog poop pickup rule. If it wasn't for a festival that day that apparently set a Guiness World Record for most sardines eaten by a group, there would have been nothing for us to do! I will add that restaurants on the main strip served escargo, which was well in demand.

Hotel location excellent, beach, ferry, and town centre all within walking distance. Staff not particularly friendly but ok. Room ok, hotel in general could do with bringing up to date, especially due to new hotels being built just a ferry ride away where the beaches are really good, sea obviously still cold though lol. We found meals etc a lot cheaper in Setubal compared with Estoril/Sintra area

I stayed here with my fiancée in February 2006 for the weekend. It was a great hotel, very clean and well equipped etc.
Rooms very spacious and had good air conditioning (although not really needed in February)
It was quiet and obviously off season in the town (Setubal), but I liked the peaceful relaxed atmosphere.
The drive to Lisbon took about 30 mins, but was really nice and scenic across Europe’s longest bridge.
The staff were very helpful and knew a lot about the local area
Parking was free overnight and on Sunday outside the hotel
The location of the Hotel was in the heart of the town of Setubal and felt very safe to wander around in the evenings
The breakfast was nice, a whole buffet selection of cereal, pastries, fruit, juices and even hot food too. The best part is the location of the free breakfast. It's in the "Panoramic Room" and it had a great view out to the harbour and the scenic cobbled streets
I think this hotel was very good and I got a great price for the room, so would definitely recommend it and stay there again if I visit Lisbon in the future.

  • Liked — Free Breakfast in the "Panoramic Room"
  • Disliked — Air Con didn't work to start with and traffic noise from front rooms, but not a big problem for me
  • Tips/Secrets — Great drive to Lisbon, over the Long bridge and really scenic views as you approach the city
