“Serene”
Reviewed 8 August 2012

The location of this hotel is simply serene – gently swaying eucalyptus trees all around, and wandering sheep's bells in the distance below the trees. When we stayed there mid-July, Lisbon was sizzling in hot weather while Sintra was considerably cooler and much more comfortable. The hotel rooms are clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Our room was bigger than most in this hotel category of historical hotels. Beds are comfortable and breakfast buffet is generous.

It would be a shame not to spend at least a few nights in Sintra- this lovely town has so much to offer- but you'd want somewhere classy, oozing charm and with a historical past to stay. Lawrence's ticks all the boxes. It is rumoured to be the oldest hotel on the Iberian peninsula, dating from 1790 - lord Byron stayed here- but it has of course been lovingly restored and modernised, without losing that special appeal.
We stayed in the Eca de Quieroz suite, named after the famous Portuegese writer who stayed there, and I've seldom
seen a room as lovely as this one. Light and airy, wonderfully quiet and with great views, with cosy and comfy sofa's and an enormous bed.
The hotel is very centrally located- the walks to the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace start nearby, and the National Palace is 5 min away. It was great to come home after a busy day of sightseeing and wind down in the lovely rosegarden of the hotel.
To top the whole experience , Lawrence's has a famous restaurant which presents you with the best the modern Portuegese cuisne has to offer. Bliss. And o, did I mention the helpful staff at the reception desk?

We stayed in this hotel during a 2 day visit to Sintra. It is a lovely old hotel which is well maintained. Our room was well furnished and well decorated. There are also some lovely sitting areas around the hotel. There is free wifi in the reception area and the close by sitting areas.

We ate in the restaurant one night and the food and service were both great and they also had a great wine list. The hotel staff generally are also very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is OK, but there isn't a huge amount of variety.

The hotel has a great position - a 5 minute walk from the centre of Sintra. The 435 bus (which comes from the station and goes up to the moorish castle and Pena Palace) stops just near the front door.

I would recommend this hotel.

We, a retired couple, stayed at Lawrence's for two nights in late June 2012. the hotel is well-situated in the old town, not far from the Nacional Palace and only a 5€ taxi ride up the steep road to the Pena Palace, from which we later walked down to the Moorish Castle and then back down to the old town again. We drove through the narrow, hilly Sintra streets to get to the hotel but the pre-provided directions were good and we were able to pull over to the curb and quickly unload before being taken to the nearby locked parking (included). We had an absolutely charming room with views over treed areas in two directions, a balcony on which to enjoy a pre-dinner drink, beautiful furnishings and an exquisitely comfortable large bed. There was an excellent hot and cold breakfast buffet in the main dining room, where we also ate for one of our two evening meals. The hotel is justifiably as well-known for its restaurant (which was surprisingly affordable) as for its lovely 18th century ambience. All staff in the hotel and dining room was uniformly cheerful and helpful. There was free wifi, and - although it did not seem to reach our room- there were several comfortable "living rooms" in which to use it. We doubt that there could be a better option for a couple of nights in this wonderful town.

We stayed for just one night here but really appreciated the location: perfect for walking to the main sites ( apart from Pena palace) and also to restaurants; they also have parking literally 2 minutes away. Staff were really helpful: recommended sights and walked us to the car park. Our room was right at the top and very pretty but also had a slight smelly problem with the plumbing: this was the only negative.

Breakfast was really good and pastries extremely fresh with freshly squeezed juice.

Great location, close to town and its castles and palaces... Overlooking a quiet wooded valley.. Kind and efficient staff. Nice little bar and library, though it seemed we were the only guests to use these rooms. Byron is supposed to have stayed and, who knows, left behind something english..(?). Nice, spacious dining room, with "pomp and circumstance"-type music piped in, but food average and, again, not many other diners on the evening we had dinner there.. Breakfast good. Lovely rooms (we saw two), though ours had a not-so-nice smell in the bathroom as soon as water taps were operated.. Good cupboard space and regular hangers (as opposed to the hangers with straight hooks that clip into holes attached to the railing..)!

If you're in the Sintra historic center to play tourist, you can't beat the location, which is in easy walking distance to the National Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, as well as the bus stop for the Moorish Castle and Palacio da Pena.

My room was spacious and charming, with a view of the Moorish Castle on one side and trees on the other. There was plenty of closet space, a nice little sitting room separate from the bedroom, and a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. The bed was comfortable and had both down and non-down pillow options. Unlike most hotels of this age, it actually has a lift, so there's no hauling your heavy bags up flights of stairs. Included wifi is about average. As a recent reviewer mentioned, some aspects of the decor are a bit dated and funky, but no more so than you'd expect in any small, historic hotel.

There were just two downsides, really. In the room next to mine, there was either a washing machine or someone running a jacuzzi for long periods--this was noisy and a bit annoying, but not too bad if I shut the bedroom door. The restaurant also isn't that great. At breakfast, the bread was stale and the fruit not particularly fresh. However, it's pretty easy to walk down the hill a bit and get something else.
