There are lots of super hotels in Sintra but now that we've stayed at Lawrence's we won't stay anywhere else. It feels less like a hotel and more like your own holiday mansion with a full staff ready to accommodate you. A very calm ambience. We had a suite which was wonderful - and the bathroom had a jacuzzi bath. The decor and furnishings are all very stylish and understated. Superb breakfast. Restaurant is fantastic too (see separate review). Brilliant views from rooms, restaurant, communal areas etc and just a couple of minutes walk from the centre.

Following my partner's business trip to Lisbon, we booked Lawrence's hotel thinking it would be the perfect antidote to the city - and just what we needed for a romantic weekend away.

If first impressions count, my heart sank when the taxi drew up outside a somewhat tired and shabby looking hotel. However, the welcome we received from the reception staff was quite the opposite as they were warm, kind and helpful - and even most gracious when we asked to be moved into another room, only to change our minds again a few minutes later!

Our room was gloriously light-filled, with large dual aspect picture windows and a four poster bed. The furnishings however were slighty jaded, somewhat stained, cheap impersonations of antiques. The bathroom was in need of a complete overhaul, as the tiles are chipped and broken, the grouting mouldy and there are lots of grubby scratches in the (plastic!) bath. Oh...and it was absolutely Baltic as there was no heating in our room. I'm from Scotland and quite used to being cold, but this was truly unbearable. But, true to form, the receptionist delivered a heater within a few minutes of being asked.

Having read through my review before posting, it sounds like I would run a mile before returning here, but the opposite is true. Once we had a little wander into town and then up through the woods to the Moorish Castle we returned in the fading light to find the hotel had taken on a whole new persona. Bathed in soft light and with wood fires burning in the sitting areas, it actually looked and felt like the charming and romantic (even rather upmarket!) hotel we had imagined we had booked - based on the photographs posted on the hotel's website.

Although we had a rather lovely weekend, it was possibly because we hired bicycles locally to cycle to the coast (fabulous - and recommended) and we had lengthy hikes through some lovely woodlands to visit the various splendid castles in the vicinity.

Would I recommend the Lawrence Hotel? On balance, yes, as it's in a fantastic location and the service is wonderful. And in spite of initial appearances, it has a charm that can't fail to grow on you.

The low sober façade on the street seemed promising, Lord Byron himself having patronized the premises sounded like good omen. The restaurant was empty (Sunday lunch on a dripping afternoon) which converged on us the abiding attention of at least four idle waiters. The recommended daily special was pigeon pie with peas and potatoes duchesse served with pomp and circumstance. Lovely. The corner table next to a window provided a melancholic view of the luscious valley and the quiet Mozart background was appropriate. Honest prices. So why only three stars? We did realize that the 'oldest inn of the Iberian Peninsula' (1764) must have seen better days in terms of decoration before some refurbishment took place in the 1980's or 1990's imposing dull furniture and a bland color scheme everywhere. (We asked to see a room: a bit claustrophobic and scanty.)

We arrived in Lisboa and went directly to this hotel and were shown to our spotless rooms, we had requested a view and were impressed with our rooms. We were traveling with our 2 adult kids, 1 who picked up the flu. I was so impressed with the care the staff took to ensure our daughter was looked after, bringing her partridge consomme, informing us about a pharmacy nearby and noticing she was absent from breakfast, bringing us a tray of tea with bread and jams for her. We loved the feel of this hotel, historic, with sitting areas on every level. David at reception was such a gentleman and helpful. The breakfast was delicious with "fresh cheese" and warm bread and an assortment of hard and creamy cheeses. Fresh orange juice too. We only had 1 night in Sintra but I strongly suggest 2 bc it is a fairy tale place and staying at Lawrences Hotel fits right into the flavour of Sintra. It is a cozy retreat, it is not a high rise hotel with a huge reception area if that's where you typically like to sleep. I like a warm and quaint place. Lastly, they helped us set up for a rental car. Anything we needed, the staff were so pleasant and eager to help us with.

True - this hotel has a rustic charm to it, but certainly not a useful business base. It does make an interesting and potentially charming hotel for a weekend break with your other-half (I wouldn't stay longer) and I would visit again for that reason but absolutely not if I was on a business trip.

Sintra itself is charming a very worthy place to visit with plenty of traditional buildings and interesting architecture set into a hillside.

The hotel environment is reasonably well presented with tiled floors and plenty of stone internal decorations and I'm sure is designed to be traditional but it simply didn't facilitate my stay on business.

The room was certainly large, but the floor creaked terribly, not a problem for me, but I was very conscious of making a noise for others whilst I was moving around either late at night or early in the morning prior to heading for airport. The aircon made a terrible racket and although I pushed every button possible it seemed to be stuck on 25 degrees - in the end I turned it off.

The room furniture was nothing like those shown in the pictures above and whilst it was absolutely clean, it was very limited and basic in its content (despite the hotel being quiet). There appeared to be several wifi channels available but I was unable to connect to any of them (which I normally manage to do with no difficulty).

I only had breakfast on a couple of days as I had dinner elsewhere in the evenings, but from the quality of the morning food I would say that it is probably good and better than the experience as a business hotel.

In summary I would will go back - but only in a personal capacity and will certainly check prior to booking that I was given a decent room. Never again for business.

Sintra is stunning and fairy-tale like, and though Lawrence's Hotel is neither it certainly fits into this atmosphere. It has an old English country inn style to it, with massive four-poster beds, (hard as rock but somehow sleeping well was never a problem), cozy common areas with a fire, and pictures of pale English ladies looking down from the walls in the rooms (you almost expect them to haunt the place, in a nice, benign way). Our room had a small balcony towards a lush and lovely garden, ask for a room facing that way. There's nothing spectacular or luxurious about this establishment but it sure is cozy and clean and has all basic amenities. The service is impeccable and always provided with a smile. Location is perfect, just a couple of minutes stroll to the historical centre of Sintra. They also have a restaurant, had one dinner there, was decent, somewhat pricey, and again not particularily spectacular.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the garden.
