Old hotel with character in a great location for exploring Sintra. We stayed with another couple and both rooms were of a good size. Bathrooms were fine with showers in the bath rather than separate cubicles.
There are several small public sitting areas which were quiet and comfortable. Breakfast is buffet style. The choice of a cooked breakfast was limited to a few rashers of bacon and some rubbery scrambled eggs. The cold selection was better with cereal, cold meats and cheese but was by no means extensive.
Neither of our rooms had a safe that worked and one room had a non-flushing toilet, a problem which was soon rectified. Internet access was free but only available in the conference room and was very slow.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor and above have best views

We stayed two nights at Lawrence's hotel as part of a walking holiday. The hotel is well positioned only a short walk from the centre of town but quiet. It is rather dark and pokey inside. We were in the Jane Lawrence room which was double aspect and with a four poster bed. The mattress however was very hard. The ensuite bathroom was very dark and had seen better days. There was a huge three way crack in the sink that had been crudely patched up. Internet access was only accessible two floors down sitting in a dark area outside the conference room. Breakfast was adequate. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. This hotel is living off the past. It has a certain charm but doesn't really warrant it's 5 star ranking.

Room Tip: The Jane Lawrence room has an extra window but the mattress is very very hard.

Charming old world hotel, with a wonderful staff. We enjoyed three quiet nights at this establishment at the end of a 13 day trip to Spain and Portugal, and would highly recommend this hotel. Sintra is particularily enjoyable in the evening when all of the "day trippers" have returned to Lisboa, and one can wander through the tiny, curvy streets. We had two great dinners in the hotel restaurant, and truely enjoyed the wonderful breakfasts that this hotel provides. We were glad that we decided to use the Lawrence Hotel as our base to tour the Lisboa area, and hope to one day return on a future visit to Portugal.

We stayed here in April 2013. The location is excellent. Just out of the hustle and bustle of central Sintra but an easy 5 minute walk. The rooms each have a small balcony and have a leafy outlook. The atmosphere is lovely, romantic. The rooms were a good size, bed etc was comfortable. Very quiet. Staff at front desk were delightful. Highly recommend it.

We actually stayed here in November 2011. The atmosphere was certainly quaint, historic and romantic. The wood burning fireplace with tea and wine service was ideal for the chilly evenings. The breakfast was fantastic. However, we would not stay here again because we did not enjoy the most important part of any hotel stay: our sleep. The bed was really terrible. My spouse spent the rest of our trip with back pain because the mattress was so old and hard. The sheets were worn. The room overall had a foul odour. We could hear the front desk lady walk in her heels loudly down the halls.

Unless they've made room upgrades , especially the beds, don't stay the night.

Room Tip: Don't choose a room on the same floor as the front desk. Walls are thin and you can hear everyon...

Stayed with wife over a 3-night period. Although originally planned to spend more time in hotel to enjoy the fireplace and other nice features/appeals, ended up going out more often, as hotel experience wasn't up to expectations.

It is a pity, since hotel itself has good potential, but details have been overlooked. Loads of tradition and history (Lord Byron, oldest hotel in the region, etc.), but unsure if it's worth even a 4-star marking. Yes, cute & clean rooms, good heating (a must during a rainy April), splendid great location, nice views and very friendly staff, but that's about it.

Phones didn't work, hence you need to use your mobile to reach reception. Internet didn't work, which seemed to be related to phone problems, but there seemed to be no sense of urgency to fix phone/internet issues after the full 3 nights. The room safe didn't open; however, over the 3 days of our presence, no attempt made to replace the safe, to force it open or to get a new key. No kettle in the room for a tea/coffee (a must in any rated hotel in Northern Europe), which you would expect from a hotel catering primarily for tourists. No drinks menu left in the room and, worst of all, a separate paper disclaimer that you will be charged €10/person for room delivery; consequently, after ordering what I would say is only average food to your room, and without being able to properly choose your wine, you end up paying a very hefty bill.

Also, unless you like Portuguese TV, you'll be again unlucky; for some reason, the volume for foreign channels doesn't go beyond a whisper. Finally, the rooms could benefit from more care - the shower handle was peeling off and the upholstery was dirtier than you should expect for a hotel at this price range.

After a formal complaint, Senior Management reacted quickly and was attentive, but my advice is for them to move from corrective to preventive "maintenance" to ensure Lawrence's remains truthful to its full potential, as it's unfortunately lagging behind.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with mountain view, distant from the main road's noise.

Lawrence’s Hotel – http://www.sintra-lawrenceshotel.com/ -- is located in Sintra, Portugal, and according to the proprietors is the oldest hotel on the Iberian Peninsula.

The staff is very friendly and helpful, and makes recommendations of things to see and do with your pleasure in mind, rather than some other purpose.

The breakfast buffet is varied and delicious, and includes (among other things) many cheeses and fruits and juices, eggs cooked to order, a variety of breads and rolls and croissants and vol au vent, bacon, cereals, etc.—all available for several hours every morning.

The location is excellent for walking to the fascinating town center and worthwhile tourist attractions such as the elaborate garden and castle at Quinta da Regaleira, which is only a few minutes away on foot. Children will enjoy this garden as much as adults A quick bus ride takes you to several interesting sites such as the palace Pena.

The rooms are quiet and comfortable, some have a view overlooking Sintra, and some of them overlook a stream that you can hear flowing by if you open a window. Trivia of interest to some: the poet Lord Byron stayed 10 days at Lawrence’s Hotel in the early 1800’s.

The walls are so enormously thick in this centuries old building that the wireless only works in public spots but this is a boutique hotel with only sixteen rooms and several rather private spaces like small living rooms and the bar so you won’t feel as if you’re in a crowd when you sit down to go online.

Room Tip: Because the walls are so thick the rooms are probably quiet all over. Certainly everywhere we went o...
