This castle is beautiful and colorful. The higher you go the better the views. Once you buy your ticket I recommend spending the money for the bus ride up the hill to the castle. The ride takes about 2 minutes. You'll need energy to explore the castle. You are able to self guide yourself through the grounds and the interior rooms. Well worth a visit.

We walked here ( short walk) from the Castelo dos Mouros. The grounds are beautiful and enchanting and the palace itself shoukd not be missed. We walked the whole circuit (Sintra town centre -Castelos dos Mouros- Pena palace and back) at a leisurely pace in a day...and had a well deserved cake and coffee when we got back to town!

Visited this palace in March in a heavy foggy day. The castle is beautiful and surrounded by thick forest. the scale is smaller than I thought but we had a glimpse of Portugal royalty's life. Because of the fog, we didn't see the view I saw from the tourist book. But I could imaging how beautiful the view would've been.

However, we had the worst tourist nightmare at this place. We parked our car in the public parking (roadside parking) near the ticket office, a short walking distance to the entrance of the palace. After our visit, we discovered that thief broke our rental car and took ALL our belongings and the souvenir we bought during our trip in Portugal. Nothing was left in the car and we had nothing but clothes and our paperwork that we carried. It was a very bad experience.

Be aware of their who targets tourists.

A friend and I walked directly from the Castelo dos Mouros to the palace. Here are our thoughts:

+ Very nice park and a sweet palace.
+ The complete area is very well maintained and you can spend there without effort some hours of your time.

° When you decide to walk back while ignoring the busses buy a map at the Sintra train station for 1 EUR in order to find easily your way back to Sintra. We got the impression that most of the people are taking the bus and therefore the signs to Sintra for pedestrians are rare.

Overall: very good idea to visit the palace, high recommendation to visit as well the castle.

This palace is a long way outside the centre of Sintra so you need to drive or catch the local circular bus which is cheaper than the red hop on hop off bus. The palace is set on a steep hill but they do offer a mini bus service for 3 Euros. You have a choice to go in the grounds only, or the grounds and the terraces around the palace or gounds, terraces and palace. The views from the terraces are wonderful and there is a cafe and shop there. The palace has lots of room settings from different periods and there is also a lot of beautiful tiling and architectural features. The grounds are vast you could spend all day here. We just visited the lakes not very well sign posted but we got there. The entrance to the castle is opposite so if you still have time you can also visit that as well.
