We took the bus which provides a scenic ride to the Palace. Quite grand and really does seem fairy-tale like. Beautiful gardens, beautiful palace and the weather was perfect. We can certainly understand the draw to this magical place. The town of Sintra is charming, but we could not find the horse drawn carriages. People were wonderful.
Having said that, Sintra is a tourist trap. Everything is substantially more expensive than in other parts of Portugal. We sat down for a drink (1 beer & 1 Sangria for 17.50 Euro.....is just a bit over the top). Entrance fees were high.

Pena Palace is a bit like something out of a fairytale. Tantalizing views from the road and from other parts of Sintra. The path up to the palace is steep and winding through immaculate gardens.
The palace is very different to the other buildings around Sintra, with its bright yellow walls and masses of tiling. The views from inside the palace are quite spectacular.
Many of the rooms contained original furniture which made this a more interesting experience.

Lush, green foliage and well laid out park. Very relaxing to walk along the trails. Very interesting and beautiful garden.

Don't take the bus to go to the palace which is located at the top of a hill. It is worth walking up to this place. The nature is flourishing. And what a colourful palace! The day we went there, there was fog at the top, so the atmosphere was like enchanted.

The gardens are extensive and varied, my favourite part was the fern valley. Nice walk from Sintra via a footpath just beyond Quinta da Regaleira. Don't miss the Chalet of the Countess of Edla - like something out of a Brothers Grimm fairytale.
