“Worth it for the views”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

The Palce is situated at the summit of a hill with amazing views all the way to Lisbon on a clear day, the architecture is rather reminisant of the Bavarian Castles of King Ludwig. The interior is rather disappointing and feels like a neglected nineteenth century Railway Hotel. The Portuguese Royal family appeared to have pretty terrible taste, the Palace gets incredibly busy so time your visit carefully. It is well worth taking a taxi up from Sintra which costs just a few Euro's, you can then take a 3 Euro minibus right up to the gates. Worth doing it as the last stretch is a steep climb.

The Palace is definitely worth visiting, its locatuion is amazing and the exterior is currently subject to extensive restoration so be aware large parts of the building are covered in scaffolding. Unfortunately the interior is rather disappointing, clearly a more imaginative curator needs to take it in hand, weed out the exhibits which seem to have nothing to do with the Palace and have been dumped there as they dont quite know what to do with them. They need to provide more information about the fascinating former Royal occupants & the architect.

“Worth the trip up the mountain”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

Nice location on top of a mountain. Nice views from a number of locations. Once you purchase your ticket, there is a tram (extra fee) to take you to the top.. The hill is steep so the tram is worth the price.

If you drive, parking will be difficult, better take public transportation. Wherever you park the walk will be uphill. Self guided tour includes furnished rooms and information on the history of the Palace. Parts of the palace are under scaffolding right now, so picture taking is not ideal. but seeing the process of restoration is interesting.

Once at the top, there are still a number of stairs required to see the upper levels.

“Not to be Missed”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

We took bus 434 (5 euro) up the mountain to visit both the Moorish Castle ruins and the Pena Palace. Breathtaking views if you do some climbing. Parts of the palace are under scaffolding right now, so picture taking is not ideal, but there is plenty to see on the grounds and up to the High Cross. The palace and furnishings are an eclectic mix of styles. Don't miss if you're in Sintra.

For those unable to get up the mountain, there is a small green bus that will take you up for 3,5 euro.

“Not-to-be-missed architectural oddity”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

First things first: the tram that takes you from the grounds entrance to the palace is 100% worth the 3 euros (roundtrip). That is one steep (and long) hill. You can buy the ticket just inside the entrance at the gift shop, but not on the tram.

The palace in and of itself is worth seeing because of its odd architecture - yellow tiled exterior, arches, domes, parapets...it's quite a mish-mash. It's not exactly beautiful, but it sure is fascinating. I happen to be a sucker for tiles, so Pena Palace was a dream come true for me. The size of the place is very manageable as well; only a few rooms are open for viewing, and the building isn't that big. If you walk around the exterior, you're treated to some magnificent views. And like many places in Portugal, it's not overrun with tourists. Certainly busier than the Moorish Castle, but still nothing compared to Versailles, or Neuschwanstein.

I wish we'd allowed more time to explore the gardens. We poked around a little at the bottom while waiting for the tram to the palace, but we should've given ourselves an extra hour.

We bought a combo pass for Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle, and it did save us some money.
