Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

“Stunning views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 May 2012

This is (I think) the oldest of the many castles we visited in Sintra, with centuries of history as the castle passed from the Moors to the Portuguese, to the Jewish community (and even the Spanish, perhaps?). Although not hugely extensive, the walk along the castle walls is full of history and has incredible views down onto Quinta da Regaleira and up to Pena Palace. The solid functionality and simplicity of this ancient castle make a nice contrast from the crazy exuberance of those palaces.

“fave place of my visit - breath taking views!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2012

visited sintra as a day trip from lisbon and headed straight to the castle. one of the round trip buses takes you there as well as to the palacio nacional da pena. be aware of the rules of the bus as you can hop on and off as many times as you like on the way out of town but on the return journey, you can only get off at one stop. so the advice would be to do the castle first, then the pena palace and then back into town. once the bus drops you off, tickets can be obtained at the ticket office and it's another 10-15 minutes walk to within the ramparts where you can start to climb to the viewpoints. it is not very strenuous but might be scary for people with fear of heights. i was very paranoid after having taken a fall sometime ago, so was very anxious and had to take it very slow. there are a few viewpoints and there was work being done on one part of the wall, so a route was diverted. the views are really nice and being on the ramparts is pretty exhilarating. the bus service starts after 9, so you can't really go any earlier (also the ticket office doesn't open till either 9.30 or 9.45). it's best to go as early as possible as it gets pretty busy as the day progresses. by the time we left, there were many tourists moving in the other direction towards the ramparts. if you're there early you can take as much time as you need without feeling the rush/ stress. also a good view of the pena palace from there and sintra and the national palace itself. definitely must visit - it's probably my favourite place of the entire trip!!

“Best Panoramic Views I've Ever Seen”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2012

The views from the top of this castle overlooking the beautiful town of Sintra and the Atlantic Ocean are unbeatable. I've climbed to the peaks of many sites throughout Europe and North America and I cannot think of a more breath-taking view than that from the Moorish Castle.

I am somewhat afraid of heights but am very glad that I challenged myself to do this. It is very high but it is perfectly safe and the climb is not nearly as scary as it may seem in photographs. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, of course.

“Outstanding views”

Built between two mountain tops, it offers incredible views of the countryside from Sintra to the sea. Vertiginous cliffs and steep footpaths.
