Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

“Worth a detour”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

The Moors' castle is in the town of Sintra, about several miles from the Palace that is your real reason for visiting. But when you've returned from that, take 45 minutes to visit this impressive castle. The tilework in some of the rooms warrants a visit all on its own.

“Walled Area on Mountain”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

While the area of the Moors castle is extensive it is mainly walled fortifications. There are some areas inside that have a museum and detail the life of the people who lived here.

The walls are restored and there is a lot of climbing up and down involved to see the entire complex. Use comfortable shoes here. Also look at the detailed forecast as mist can shroud this place easily.

Great views of all the way to the Sea can be had here but don't expect the interiors of Pena or the serene grounds of Regaleira.

“Moors' Castle (Castelo dos Mouros)”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

Breathtaking views (and quite a climb). The sheer walls and high altitude make this a must visit place. Views are spectacular, but be warned. It is quite a climb to the top, and the steps are steep and narrow. But if I can make it so can you.

“MOOR'S CASTLE”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

Another long walk and a large pile of rocks. Great history but not very impressive. Plan to do lots of walking and climbing up and down the walls and ramparts

“you will never regret it!”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

Great place to relax in the nature and enjoy a great panoramic view. The walls are the only remaining of the castle but you could enjoy the beautiful walk in the nature.
