Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

“A pleasant short trip”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

After reading some reviews I was surprised to find our that you really did not have to climb much if you entered at the main gate. It took us about 40 minutes to go around and climb to the turrets. Nice views and a beautiful park with mossy boulders. By the way if you are spending several days in Sintra - which you certainly should (I would even advise to stay in Sintra and visit Lisbon and not vice versa) go there in the morning - easy to find parking space and not too many tourists

“Worth the steep climb!”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We actually didn't walk up, because we took a taxi from Cascais and the friendly driver suggested we take the taxi up and walk down. We took it to the entrance of the Moors' castle where we also purchased our ticket for Pena Palace where we went after (highly recommended to avoid the long lines for tickets there). The old castle is mainly walls these days, but it's very beautiful and the view is breathtaking. They have made the place very easy to visit with a cafe inside, washrooms etc. warmly recommend a visit! Just make sure to have good shoes.

“Old castle from the 8th century (Master Piece)”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

Old castle with great history from the Moors which was built by the muslims in the 8th century.

Great view for the gardens.

They sell food and drinks there.

If you are afraid of heights watch out as most staircases doesnt have rail.

Must visit as its a master piece

We bought the combined ticket for the Castle and the Palace. Dont take the hop-on hop-off bus as its really expensive compared to the local bus (434).

Take water and stay hydrated as there is much walking to be done.

“Incredible views”
Reviewed 2 August 2014

The ticket office is close to Sintra Palace and there is decent parking nearby. There is a fair walk up to the castle and another trek up to the highest parts. I was quite worried a couple of times as the wind was blowing hard off the Atlantic through the slots in the castle wall as we walked up the narrow battlements. Once we got to the top though, the views were worth it!

Portugese health and safety is more... relaxed than in the UK so there is a lack of safety rails that you might find in a British castle. I suppose bolting bits of iron onto a cultural artifact over a thousand years old isn't quite the thing to do. So do take care.

Oh yes, on the way back down we found a path that was suitable for pushchairs rather than teetering along the battlements!

Nice cafe and little shop on site too
