“It seems to be in wonderland”
Reviewed 13 December 2013

We stayed 1 night in Almaa Sintra Hostel and we really appreciate the style an the relaxing amosphere, far from noises and traffic, but at the same time close to Sintra's main attractions (if you have a car)! Only two problems: 1) signs on the main street are not so well remarcables; 2) too many mosquitos at night in the room. However we had a good staying!

While a bit confusing to find and good walk from the center, I give a Very Good rating because of the ambience, history and furnishings of the old building itself, the surrounding grounds that are a pleasure to walk thru in the early morn and the enthusiasm of the couple who manages the hostel.
The old original tile work on the family kitchen walls is hand painted; compare the detail of identical subject matter of some tiles to discover the proof. Also while a walking distance from train station, it is very close to the magnificent unique Quinta da Regaleira.

Room Tip: I arrived early & stayed in dorm next to the window for my choice of bed.

I really liked the environment, the rooms and the decoration. However the rooms are not soundproof making our stay less positive. However, I would recommend this hostel due to its location and originality.

A little bit outside the center of the city, reachble by bus 5 min - just next to one of the attractions (very pretty castle/palace). Walking distance to the center app 2-3 km.
the house is clean and the stuff very friendly and helpfull. We rent bikes which were delivered to the doorstep. Good breakfast - both milky products and bread with diff spread/cheese. Coffee and tea for free at any time. You can also make your own breakfast/dinner.
Yoga lessons are available. There is a dog Pavlov that can do tricks. The house is placed in a big garden and there is a mini pool for the hot days too chill in. During the evening there was a bar open for everyone.
The room was simply decorated, the bathroom was shared and the same for toilets which were separated by curtain (?!!) - the only thing I found a little too weird/hippie. There was also a normal wc though!
Overall, a place I would defenately come back to!

I had a great few days staying at Almaa. The hostel building was on the edge of Sintra town with a surrounding 'estate' of many hectares....a lovely peaceful place to walk and contemplate.
My lodgings were comfy and homely, with a family kitchen where you could prepare your own meals and enjoy an inclusive breakfast.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and made my stay a most enjoyable one.

I don't think there are enough superlatives in the English language to describe how much we loved this place. The sense of peace enveloped us as soon as we entered the building. It's easily the most characterful hostel we've ever stayed in, the decoration, the fittings, the furniture - all wonderfully done. Comfortable beds and a great night's sleep. Amazing gardens. Pavlov the dog is adorable. Just sorry we were only here for one night. We definitely hope to return.
