Description: Where Cafe Saudade now stands, there used to be housed the historical Queijadas da Mathilde cheesecake factory from 1888 to 1974.These queijadas de Sintra (cheesecakes) were a favorite of King Ferdinand II (who restored the Pena Palace). During the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, the king gave the factory founder a stamp marked Mathilde, to brand the cheesecakes bound for the royal family. The Cafe Saudade was restored and preserved over a year long renovation in 2008 and opened in the summer of 2009. Recycled and regional materials and resources were used to create an environment that authentic. We pride ourselves for this and and for the fact that our team offers the best service they can.The spaces of the old cheesecake factory are today a cultural reference in Sintra's recent historical background. Its preservation allows us a glimpse into the ancient manufacturing process of the typical queijada de Sintra.Wander through the "Saudade Labyrinth" and fall in love with Sintra. Visit our Art Gallery and explore the various rooms with pieces of furniture that we restored with love and care, and in which we have handcrafts for sale. We host literary gatherings, jazz and fado concerts and other cultural activities.

Off the tourist track and near the train station is this lovely cafe/restaurant. We are so glad that we stopped by for a light dinner. We had a panini, sandwich, garlic butter toast, a pot of tea, and a bottle of water (grand total = 17 euros). The menu also included salads, a soup of the day, and a variety of other small and medium plates, desserts, pastries, coffees, and drinks.

In short - It was delicious. Fresh and tasty vegetables and a lovely bread. The bread was definitely fresh (from a local baker). The garlic butter toast was just salty and garlic-y enough. The tea was delightful (and I drink a LOT of tea).

Even better, the folks working there were kind and attentive, with smiles on their faces and a real desire to make sure that we enjoyed our meal. We really felt like they were happy to have us there.

The cafe itself is very cute. There are two rooms in the front of the kitchen and one behind and to the left. The one in the back is cozy and smaller. The two in the front get good sun and have a lot of tables. I think that I remember a few tables out front - but I can't honestly remember, as we sat inside.

A perfect place to spend a bit of time while in Sentra when your feet need a break - whether you just want a coffee while you read the paper or you want to sit down with a group of friends and share a meal.

when I saw that it was raided as nr 1 I was worried it might disappoint me. But no - it's nr 1 for a lot of reasons. Excellent food, quirky location, friendly staff and EXCELLENT FOOD :-) I tried the Omega 3 sandwich with salmon and goat cheese. Yum :-) Do yourself a favour and try it.

Enjoyed a lunch at Saudade while visiting Sintra...my friend and I each had soup and a fabulous salad topped with smoked salmon. The only problem is we did not save room for dessert! We sat right across from the dessert case and they all looked awesome, especially the apple pie!

The restaurant/tea salon looked cozy. Its decor was an eclectic assemblage that beckoned to us as we were walking by. The sweet-scented bakery was located in the inner chamber of the shop. Some of the pastries looked utterly spectacular. They lured us into an irreversible decision to sit down and cater to our taste buds.

We ordered a pie piled higher with apple chunks than any we had ever seen and the cheese cake that came recommended by the attentive staff. We were not disappointed and were delighted to have an opportunity to compliment the young baker who happened to walk past.

The establishment was only a stone's throw from the Sintra train station and a crowning glory to our visit to the historical town.
