A lovely oasis of calm amid hectic Sintra. Beautiful grounds, wonderful staff, spectacular interior preservation of this charming palace. Feels like you're living in another far more civilized era, away from the noise of everyday life.

It’s difficult to know where to start with this review, there is so much to say that is exceptionally positive about this place. Sintra offers many amenities for Tourists and this hotel is very conveniently located close to the bus route taking you up to the must-see Pena Palace and Moorish castle. And the Quinta da Regaleira estate is just across the road. We had returned to Portugal for a short break after a wonderful but all too brief visit a few months earlier. Sintra was top of our list to spend more time. We had found an amazing off-season deal to enable us to stay at this truly 5-star hotel close to Sintra center for three nights. It is about 10 minutes’ walk from Sintra tourist office along a scenic narrow road, or 5-minutes by car. There is plenty of parking at the hotel. Walking from Sintra would not be recommended for those unsteady on feet due to slope and cobbles. From the moment we arrived we realized we were in for a wonderful experience. Miguel at reception greeted us with a friendly smile and not a hint of snootiness that we feared might be characteristic of such an up-market hotel. He carried our bags and showed us the amenities with obvious pride. Our hotel room with its 17th century decor and furniture and luxurious curtains was extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. A decanter of port was ready for us to enjoy as a welcome gift. We booked dinner in the hotel restaurant that evening and enjoyed excellent food ala-carte at a very reasonable price. The waiters were very efficient with just the right balance of friendliness and service. The young sommelier Pedro was impressive, spoke excellent English and helped us select a nice Portuguese wine for our meal. We had arrived in darkness and next morning we were astonished to find a world-beating view from our room of the Sintra valley and sea. The room was quiet and the bed was extremely comfortable. As for breakfast, we can say with utmost confidence that you will not find a better spread anywhere in the world. There was a fabulous selection of breads, fruits, cheeses, meats and cooked food of the highest quality. The fruit was perfectly ripe. It was incredible that such a high quality breakfast was included in the room rate. The wallpaper and woodwork throughout the hotel is beautifully hand painted with amazing chandeliers and period furniture. We felt very privileged to be able to stay in this genuine palace from a bygone era. All of the staff at this hotel made us very welcome, so characteristic of the lovely Portuguese people, and we will come back again in a heartbeat.

Sintra is a kind of C19th Disneyland, a bonkers place where mad King Ludwig of Bavaria meets Marie Antoinette in a crazy gothic romantic fantasy of palaces, castles, gardens and follies - there's even a tower that goes down into the ground rather than up into the air! This hotel is one of those follies - a beautiful palace built for a real queen to escape the searing Portuguese summer. This is a genuine five star frescoed princess and the pea experience. It's exquisite. Relaxed in the way that only a European country house can be and staffed with friendly professionals who are truly passionate about the place. Stay here for just one night in your life and fall in love.

Room Tip: Suite number 2 - check out the hand painted 'wallpaper' it's gorgeous

The level of this hotel is not our standard for vacations, but it is nice to splurge once in a while, and this hotel is really the place to do that: beautiful gardens, fantastic rooms (at least our room was…enjoyed every ) , very pleasant and helpful stuff, and extremely good breakfast. It certainly meets the expectations of its stars and price.

Room Tip: I suppose all rooms there have good views, either towards the sea or the castle.
