“Grand hotel, relaxing atmosphere”
Reviewed 7 July 2007

The hotel is a splendid place to stay, set in fantastic gardens complete with a pool and tennis courts. It is full of character and something quite special with antique furniture in the many lounges and the rooms.

We had a delightful room on the corner of the hotel, very large and light. The bathroom was huge and although dated, spotlessly clean. We ate in the hotel restaurant which is a very grand dining room and had a lovely and enjoyable meal. The waiter service was excellent and very attentive and the food fabulous. The breakfast was really something special - fantastic buffet range of quality food, no complaints.

I suppose the only thing to add is that the hotel isn't located in the centre of Sintra so is a reasonable walk into town along a long and narrow road.

We would definitely stay at the hotel again although if you are looking for a modern, luxury hotel, this probably wouldn't be a good choice for you.

Sintra is a beautfufl place and the location of the palace is good enough to explore the town but I am baffled by the 5 star rating. It's not awful but 5 stars?...It's outdated and creaky, no real service or 'extra touches" from the staff, zero ambience..the whole place seemed "cold" to me. I had pictured a big romantic palace with excellent service and a lot of cozy nooks and crannies to hole up in. We are not hotel snobs at all, mostly we like solid 4 stars places with personalized service and a comfortable atmosphere. I didn't see the other hotels in town so I can't compare but we ended up moving to the Senhora Da Guia in Cascai (20ish) minutes away and we were thrilled that we did.

My partner and I travelled in Sintra in February for a short stay to visit breath-taking Quinta da Regaleira <---> and some of the other heritage sites. I was delighted to find a good deal to stay at Palácio de Seteais - one of the places we intended to visit anyway (130 Euros per night - pretty good for a 5 star hotel).

Our experience at Palácio de Seteais was magical from the very start. The staff were extremely courteous and helpful in my email exchanges before we travelled. The driver the hotel arranged to collect us from Lisboa airport was friendly, and the journey, made in style in a BMW, was well priced at 55 Euro (a regular cab from the airport to Sintra would have been much the dame price).

The hotel itself is simply breath-taking. As the other reviews here describe, the property is a former palace, and it certainly shows. The magnificent exterior is equally impressive during the daytime, where one can look out over the meticulously sculpted gardens to the Atlantic ocean, and at night, when the Palladian architecture creates a regal silhouette. But it is the interior which impressed us most. The building is laden with tapestries, paintings and frescos from the 17th - 19th centuries, and is beautifully decorated with period furniture. Our room was divine. Upon seeing it, we were so happy we visibly gasped. The bathroom was large and contained both a shower and a bath. The bedroom was ample with large windows which opened out onto the front of the building. needless to say, the room was decorated in 19th century style.

I had advised the staff that our visit was a surprise trip for my partner's birthday, and was thrilled that they had left champagne and sweet treats in our room as a birthday gift for him. This gesture was typical of the staff who were attentive, generous and incredibly welcoming throughout our short stay.

The hotel is located a short walk - no more than 10 minutes strolling - from the centre of the old town of SIntra. You pass Quinta da Regaleira on the way into town. From the front gardens of the hotel, you can look up and see the sober form of the Moorish castle, and the opulent shapes of Pena Palace.

As for meals, the breakfast, served in the stately dining room until 1100, was wonderful, with a fantastic selection of fresh fruits and cereals, as well as a large selection of fine cheeses, meats and breads. At no extra cost, you can order eggs any style you wish. My partner's poached eggs were beautifully cooked.
The cuisine at dinner time is not quite so impressive. But I would be hesitant to fault the hotel for this, as we struggled to find good food throughout our time in Portugal (the fact we don't eat fish may have something to do with our less than memorable experiences). But whilst we wouldn't write rave reviews of the restaurant cuisine, the ambience of the dining room was first rate, the local 'green' wines are delicious and the service is so good, you can forget about the slightly bland food, I think. In any case, you have many restaurant options within 10 minutes walking distance from the hotel if you don't want to dine in (the night we dined in town in Sintra, the food was significantly worse than in the hotel, and was worse again in the places we ate at in Lisboa, so we concluded that the Palácio de Seteais was not so bad).

Whilst some of the other reviews on this site have been a little critical, we could find no fault with the hotel. It is true that it has probably seen more glorious days, but it's age really does add to its character. If you're after homogenous American style hotel-chain ambience, this isn't a place for you. But want to stay somewhere which has rich history and genuine character, you will find nowhere better than Palácio de Seteais.

We spent two nights in this hotel during a weekend trip to Sintra. I was torn between staying in this hotel and Lawrence's, and chose the Palacio de Seteais because I happened to get a friendlier desk clerk on the phone.
Our room was furnished with antiques and some antique reproductions. The beds were quite comfortable, and the room was clean. The non-antique furniture was quite tired looking, as was the carpet. The walls were thin, and you could hear people in the hallway quite clearly. In spite of the worn furnishings, the overall look of the room was nice. The bathroom was a different story. The tiles were beautiful, but mould was growing in between them and the fixtures in the bathroom should have been replaced. Paint was peeling on the door and walls.
The breakfast buffet included an array of fruit, cereals, meats, sausages and eggs.
We ordered room service one night because we didn't feel like leaving the room. The food was extremely disappointing. My husband ordered a lobster crepe, which he couldn't eat. The lobster was leathery, and it was served with what tasted like canned tomato sauce. My daughter had lasagna, which she wouldn't eat, either. (I tasted it, and it wasn't very good.) I had vegetable soup, which was fine.
The staff was very friendly, and the gardens were lovely. I might have preferred to be a little closer to other restaurants and shops, and Lawrence's would have been a better choice in that regard.
We travelled with our 7 year old daughter who loved the hotel. The staff was very friendly to her. They arranged a Mercedes to take us to the airport, and the cost was not any more expensive than the green top taxi from the airport to the hotel had been.

  • Liked — The beautiful building and surroundings.
  • Disliked — The tiredness of the decor and lack of upkeep to the interior.

What a great place to stay in Sintra! The view out of our room down the countryside and out to the Atlantic Ocean miles away was stunning. The room itself was decorated very nicely in period furniture, and had two very large shuttered windows. The bathroom was huge, including a great tub, complete with a choice of bath salts. Open up the huge window and voila, you have a perfect sunset view while you take your bath. Service was very good, and we enjoyed the nice robes, slippers, local treats, and port wine provided. The breakfast buffet was simply superb. Certainly our top choice for staying in Sintra.

Upon arrival to this hotel, one is enchanted with the grounds and the exterior aspect of the hotel. The common parts and the gardens match the class of the front of this palace. Our room, alas, albeit nice and clean, was a bit old and somewhat "passé"... definitely in need of renovation and upgrade for this price of hotel. A lovely surprise was the quality of the food... breakfast are somptuous, dinners are simply splendid, albeit pricey for Portugal. In spite of a high price, they are worth it. The service was superb and flawless. Overall, a very good stay, a very nice staff but somewhat expensive for vetust rooms.

This hotel is fabulous in every way. The setting is peaceful with gorgeus views. The ambience fells like you're in a perfectly preserved palace, which you are. The pool is great, the rooms big. For some reason they are listed as not having A/C. Apparently only the bedrooms have A/C and not the rest of the place. This was not a problem at all despite it being exceptionally hot when we were there. The only downside for some people is that it is about a fifteen minute walk into town. It is very scenic but a bit hilly and the sidewalk gets narrow in spots. Of course they would call a taxi or you could drive (not sure where you wuld park). Breakfast was fine-dinner looked expensive and stuffy-we didnt eat there. We loved Sintra for three days. The guide books for some reason made Lawrences hotel look better but there is not the slightest comparison between the two.
