“Going back in time....”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

We were in Porto when we decided to stay two days in Sintra - having heard about it's beauty we could not really miss it and knowing that the place was quiet was the cherry on the cake.

Hotel Sintra Jardim looked as the ideal choice for us as it was reasonably priced, had parking space and was close to the old town - and indeed we were right.

The place is not hard to find - when arriving with a GPS it stops you at a gate where you will find the name of the hotel : that's not the main entrance - you have to back track in the road behind it and you will find a gate with a sign on it 'rooms available' - just ring the bell and in you go.

When we arrived at the Hotel I felt like being catapulted back in centuries. The hotel is basically a big villa immersed in a big garden. The place is very clean and quiet but what's impressing was the staff cordiality. We were greeted very nicely by the person at reception who attended to all our needs. On one night we went down to the restaurant to have a drink and one of the staff in charge went all the way to offer to light on the fireplace for us and was coming regularly to check it out to make sure we have a nice fire going on - we really appreciated his gesture as he looked really please to be doing something for us.

Breakfast is very good : you get typical bread, toast, two kind of jams and butter, yoghurt, orange juice, a hot drink, ham and cheese, chocolate spread and peanut butter. One one morning we even got a piece of home made cake!!

A perfect choice for those who want to be in peace and quiet and appreciated a place with character.

Room Tip: For the extra money I suggest to go for one of the garden view rooms - well worth the money!

This pensao has now been renamed Hotel Sintra Jardim. The hotel and grounds are beautiful, the hosts very helpful and friendly, and the art deco rooms large and cosy. But I found the bathroom was very dated and could definitely do with being done up. The breakfast was great, and the hot chocolate delicious!

We stayed 3 nights and found the in-house facilities very good - pleasant room, old-style building and furnishings, lovely garden and swimming pool, very good breakfast hosted by an efficient and attentive housekeeper (fresh fruit is much appreciated) and free access to a computer.
BUT the location proved to be troublesome.
We were in our own car and had an enormous amount of trouble just finding the place - the GPS system which was very reliable in other trouble spots, just didn't know where to send us. We eventually had to find a tourist info centre and get directions from there. I understand the hotel has recently had a name change and this has added to (but not caused) the confusion.
Sintra's city centre is not car-friendly, but walking between the hotel and the city was a life-threatening exercise - very narrow streets, no pathways and cars & buses travelling at speed. The hotel does not serve dinner, so the best option is to take a taxi into town to get to restaurants and back - not a particularly expensive option, but it does seem a little odd for a relatively short journey.
I would recommend the hotel to people who want the peace and quiet its location offers, but suggest that guests get very specific details of the address and directions on how to get there.

The family are very welcoming, the room was large and comfortable, and the grounds and swimming pool are excellent. It felt like a haven after the crowds in Sintra The decor is a bit tired, the net curtain in our bathroom fell off and was sellotaped back on and it could all do with some fresh paint - but that's just superficial.

It's about a 10 minutes walk down into Sintra centre, 20 minutes walk or a bus ride to the railway station. I would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

Room Tip: The gardens are beautiful. Well worth choosing a room with a view.

I don't know if our expectations were too high after having read the reviews here on tripadvisor...

Our room was huge, with a quite big bathroom. The place is nice, with a garden and a pool, and it's a 10 minutes walk from the town.
We payed about 80 euros for the night, which was a bit on the expensive side. We payed extra for a room "with a view", but there wasn't really much of a view. Had we seen the rooms first, we would have chosen a cheaper room on the back.

The place itself is sweet and old, and has a certain feeling of times past, but don't expect too much from the rooms themselves.

Arriving to the mansion, and greeted by two gigantic dogs, I already felt like I was in paradise. My mother and I stayed in one of the newer rooms, with our windows open, we were greeted by the local cat in the evening. The grounds of the Residencial was well kept, and so was their small swimming pool. It was refreshing to swim in the middle of the green hilly city of Sintra. I recommend this place, it was a lovely stay and well worth the price.

The hotel is housed in an old villa and the rooms are really large. The front rooms have a view and the back ones look onto the hill behind the house. I stayed in a back room which was slightly less expensive but it really didn't make a difference to me since I was never in the room except to sleep and shower. If you pay cash there is also a slight discount. The rooms are basic but clean and large.

The hotel is located outside the town of Sintra but it's an easy walk to town through a nice park. The hotel also has a huge garden and pool which would be nice to take advantage of in warmer weather.

The family that runs the hotel was very nice and very helpful too.
