“Charming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2014

It's a lovely place indeed. True - it's a little bit dated, but that only adds some old-fashioned charm. The furniture was like that my grandmother had once... what a feeling! All other good things said about it are also true. The property is 10 min walk away from the center, though.

I can't say enough great things about this charming gem of a hotel. The gardens are lovely, the scenic location away from the tourist areas personifies the magic of Sintra. If you are looking for complete luxury in accommodations this is not the place, but what you will find is infinitely better. The staff is wonderful and the owner is present and amazing. It rather feels like you are visiting your unbelievably interesting aunt and uncle on their lively hillside estate. A place you are due to be taken care of but not fussed over. Wonderfully large and well appointed rooms. I've been visiting Portugal and Sintra for decades and this is by far my favorite place to call home there.

Excellent value, a little dated, lovely setting in the hills away from the tourist rush. I received a nice welcome and witnessed the owner speak excellent English and French. I suspect the staff would also speak good Spanish.

This was very much the off-season, and it was raining a lot (welcome to Portugal in February!), so no chance to use the swimming pool, the garden or the terrace. No matter, because the rooms are large, simple, clean and comfortable with a good bed and decent pillow. You don't choose 2 stars for luxury, but you do expect a good night's sleep in a clean room - and you get it.

Only downside was that the bath is a bit short, so taking a long relaxing soak in the evening isn't really an option; and the shower is just a head on a long hose - personally (and I'm picky about bathrooms!) I like a fixed shower head with some decent pressure.

In the morning, upon opening the window you get a blast of mountain air fresh out of the forests that surround the area, and the birdsong is audible from miles around, which really makes the contrast with the town below. A great way to wake up.

Wifi was too weak in my room to connect consistently, so I went down to the communal area (which had a lovely open fire) and I worked there. But if they sort the wifi issue, I had a perfectly good desk in my room, and I could happily have set up my office there for the evening.

The hotel is 15 minutes walk to the town, and a short taxi ride back for those that don't fancy tackling the hill. I walked from the station with my suitcase which was hard work but I enjoyed the climb - still, I think it could be a little dangerous as it is along very narrow, steep, winding lanes and the Portuguese stop at very little in their cars - so I suggest you take a taxi if you can find one.

All in all, most enjoyable, and for the more active this hotel would make a great base for walking in the area, not least because there are lots of historic sites up in the hills above the town.

Room Tip: When booking, just ask for a room on the garden side.

Stayed here while visiting Sintra after lecturing in Lisbon. Was recommended by a local after explaining that I just did not want the standard antiseptic hotel. This place was magical - really fit my need for a hidden , out if the way, non- chain hotel that was filled with character and setting. Rooms were large, baths with garden-view French doors were charming , and creaking stairway with vintage photos of the estate made the place feel strangely familiar. Would not only return here in a heart-best, but still awake some mornings with visions of the mist rolling over the hills as I finished my sunrise swim, and my walk through the gardens after finishing a generous and tasteful breakfast with other patrons. As another said, I felt like I walked into a Merchant Ivory movie.

We spent 2 nights here in Oct 2013. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. Couldn't better this place for value. Maybe a bit tatty around the edges, but that is part of the charm making it feel like a 'hill station' residence of 100 years ago.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the valley overlooking the garden

This hotel is very charming and we did check the room before we checked in. There was an overpowering room freshening smell that was overwhelming. There was no AC, so windows were open, but had no screens so the room had several flies. During the day the room looked nice, at night the lighting was poor. The TV only got 2 channels and the Wifi did not work as stated. The Wifi Range booster was outside our room and we could never hook up.

The common area in the basement was dingy, but you could get wifi in the basement. The pool area was very nice, the breakfast was ok.

We stayed 3 nights at Hotel Sinitra Jardim and were thrilled we had found such a characterful place to stay after 4 nights at the Ibis in Lisbon (due to unexpected circumstances!). I loved the area - it is very green and verdant and reminded me of the Isle of Wight landslip, and the house was an oasis of charm and calm with very helpful staff and a great breakfast included in the fair price too. Beautiful garden with a fabulous pool, as I swam I could look up and see a little portion of the Moorish Castle poking out of the clouds. I do hope the house keeps it's old charm and doesn't get - updated!! Thank-you Suzanna.

Room Tip: I'm sure Suzanna will show you any available rooms then you could choose - just ask, she is most...
