My best friend and I decided to treat ourselves to a few days seclusion, we planned to relax and recouperate in the quiet surroundings. Unfortunately, 'Madam' had other ideas..... the first piano recital was magical, but we did feel slightly bullied into touristy visits, she even pursuaded a German couple to take us to a random town 40mins drive away. All we wanted to do was relax and read our books by the pool! Talking of taxis, they won't go down the rubble road to the hotel- sensible footwear recommended! A crazy, amazing, surreal (sometime spooky, with a power cut ) experience, in a beautiful home. As ex Convent School girls, we giggled at all the dark corridors and religious iconagraphy, would I go back?.....I doubt it.

Not recommended if you do not have a vehicle. This rural accommodation is 20/15 mins by taxi from the railway station/centre of old Sintra town. Bus service is available but the bus stop is 10 mins walk from the quinta, requiring a walk down a track unsuitable for luggage with wheels, unlit at night and barely accessible to vehicles. Taxi rank in old town centre is unused in the evening as taxis start from the railway station and need to be booked by telephone.
Breakfast (bread, cake, cereal, fruit; no cooked option) is 'hostel style' with all guests sat at a large, oblong table (possibly with the owner) in an enchanting dining room. Accommodation has plenty of character and features that will appeal to some people and which make it different from the rest, but the 40 min walk to/from the town along a country road would be impracticable for most people, especially at night.
This review was compiled to warn travellers that this accommodation is not in Sintra town. Hence the low mark for location, but the remoteness and style may offset the need to drive into town and the poor access track that leads down to the quinta.

We are really surprised to see that many nice reviews... I guess it is a matter of opinion. The graden, pool and view are really nice. The house it very old, not in the best shape, has rather scary decor - very dark with closed windows, heads broken of older statures, huge artificial flowers which seem to be covered with dust, very heavy humidity smelling air, old bed matrasses, old cots, and very little privicy. The owner and receptionist were nice, but we decided to move to a different hotel loosing on money for the 1st night. We found the atmosphere is the house so gloomy and heavy and beds so unpromissing in terms of comfort, that going to another hotels to all 4 of us seemed like much better options. Unless you like these kind of places, I would not recommend it at all. We trided on something new, but I guess would not try it again for some time now.

We booked ourselves in to Quinta de Sao Thiago for three nights and we liked it so much we ended up staying six. If you want all the mod-cons then this is not the place for you. However if you are looking for accommodation that is full of history, beauty and friendly service then I can highly recommend this place.

The family is lovely, highly accommodating and full of good recommendations of things to see and do.

This place is great if you feel you want to have a truly portuguese experience.
