I have traveled throughout Europe: both Western, Eastern, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean. I can say without reservation that Quinta da Capela rates right at the top; simply put, it is breathtakingly beautiful. It occupies a mountainous perch close to the rocky Atlantic. My wife and I felt upon waking up that we were floating in the clouds, and were yet surrounded by the most beautifully lush manicured, sophisticated grounds with footpaths and even the quinta's resident pair of swans. Be sure to ask to visit the magnificent tiled chapel on-site, which was part of the pilgrimmage circuit in the 18th century. Guests have choice of cottages or the main house. We loved our cottage, the stone architecture of which seemed to melt into the landscape. The breakfast was delicious and the proprietor recommended a nearby restaurant, which we also found first-rate. There is so much to see in Sintra, along the coast, in Lisbon, daytrips to Obidos and Batalha, etc. --- but you won't want to leave this little vision of heaven. We cannot wait to go back; unfortunately it will be some time now that we have babies. Finally, like the last reviewer, I found Quinta da Capela by way of the New York Times Travel Section article (indicates that apparently the movie star Cameron Diaz also stayed)!
